STUART GRANT SHOCKS DUNDEE WITH INDECENT IMAGE CHARGES AT ST FRANCIS PRIMARY SCHOOL

In May 2018, the community in Dundee was rocked by the revelation that Stuart Grant, a former primary school teacher at St Francis’ Primary School, had been involved in serious criminal activity involving indecent images of young girls.

Grant, who was employed at the school previously known as St Luke’s & St Matthew’s, was arrested and subsequently pleaded guilty to charges related to the possession of such images, which spanned a period of nearly four years.

Grant’s arrest followed a police operation on May 19 of the previous year, when officers executed a warrant at his residence on Almond Place, Dundee.

During the search, law enforcement officials seized a computer tower and an iPhone, which were later examined for evidence.

The investigation uncovered three images classified as ‘category C’—indicating a low level of severity—depicting girls aged between five and eight years old, dressed in underwear and in poses deemed indecent.

An additional image was found on a backup of Grant’s user profile, further implicating him in the possession of illicit material.

Stuart Grant, aged 33 at the time, admitted to possessing indecent images of children at his home address in Kirkcroft Brae, Liff, with the offences occurring between September 11, 2008, and June 4, 2012.

He also acknowledged possessing such images on November 30, 2011, at the same location.

The charges came to light after police received information suggesting Grant was in possession of indecent images, prompting the warrant and subsequent seizure of electronic devices.

Grant’s legal representative, Laura Hogg, stated that her client had suffered significant personal consequences as a result of his actions, including losing his job and being expelled from his marital home.

The court heard that Grant had cooperated with police during the investigation and did not respond when cautioned and charged.

During the court proceedings at Forfar Sheriff Court, Sheriff Gregor Murray acknowledged the unusual circumstances surrounding the case.

He noted that the offences were of a historical nature, involved a relatively small number of images, and that Grant’s life had undergone considerable changes since the offences.

As part of his sentence, Grant was placed on a six-month probation order and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the same duration.

Conditions of his probation include regular liaison with police offender management officers and allowing authorities to inspect any devices capable of internet access without prior notice.

In addition to the probation, Grant was required to cooperate with police and social work officers, and his devices, including the computer and phone, were ordered to be forfeited.

The sheriff emphasized that although Grant had pleaded guilty to a serious offence, the low number of images and the circumstances of the case warranted a lenient approach.

The court also deferred sentencing until May 10, 2018, and ordered that Grant be subject to the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register in the meantime.

Following the incident, the school administration at St Francis Primary issued a statement to reassure parents.

Head teacher Neil Lowden explained that Grant’s guilty plea was made in court and that there was no evidence linking any children at the school to the images found.

He emphasized that the school adheres to strict child protection policies and encouraged parents to contact the school if they had any concerns.

A parent, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed shock and sadness over the situation, noting that Grant had been a computer teacher and occasionally worked in classrooms.

The community was left to grapple with the implications of the case, which cast a shadow over the local educational environment.

Overall, the case of Stuart Grant highlights the ongoing challenges faced by institutions and authorities in safeguarding children and maintaining trust within the community.

The legal proceedings continue, with Grant facing potential jail time and ongoing monitoring as part of his sentence.
