SHOCKING CRIME IN DUNDEE: STEVEN RYDER'S HORRIFIC COLLECTION OF CHILD AND ANIMAL ABUSE IMAGES
In December 2012, a disturbing case emerged from Dundee involving Steven Ryder, a man whose online activities have shocked the community and raised serious concerns about the extent of his criminal behavior.Ryder was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images and videos, including those depicting child sexual abuse and extreme animal pornography, on multiple devices at his residence.
Police executed a search warrant at Ryder’s home on Ogilvie Street after receiving a tip-off about his illicit activities.
During the raid, officers seized desktop computers, laptops, hard drives, and discs.
The investigation uncovered a horrifying array of material, including a folder labeled “zoo,” which contained subfolders named “chimp,” “ape,” “horse,” “dog,” and “eel.” Each of these subfolders was filled with images of women engaged in sexual acts with various animals, such as grizzly bears, dogs, and octopuses.
The authorities also discovered a staggering number of images of children being sexually abused, some as young as three years old.
In total, the police found 4,309 indecent images of children, along with video clips totaling one hour and 37 minutes in length.
The content was assessed to be highly disturbing, with some images and videos depicting the most extreme forms of abuse.
During police interviews, Ryder initially denied any knowledge of the indecent images on his devices.
However, the computer crime unit later confirmed the presence of these illicit materials.
The evidence revealed that Ryder had been involved in the possession of such images for over a decade, with the earliest material dating back to June 2002 and the latest to April 2011.
The videos, which included 561 clips, depicted a range of disturbing acts, including women engaging in sexual acts with animals such as dogs, horses, and octopuses.
Watching all of this material would require more than eight days of continuous viewing.
Ryder, aged 45 and residing on Ogilvie Street, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including taking or making indecent photographs of children between June 11, 2002, and April 1, 2011.
He also admitted to possessing extreme pornography, specifically images of bestiality, from February 2, 2000, to March 19, 2011.
His defense attorney, David Duncan, described Ryder as a man who had become socially detached, living a solitary life with little contact with family or friends.
Duncan emphasized that the images found on Ryder’s computers represented only a fraction of the adult material he possessed, much of which was legal.
At Dundee Sheriff Court, Sheriff Richard Davidson sentenced Ryder to 20 months in prison and imposed a three-year extended sentence, which means Ryder will be under supervision after his release.
Additionally, Ryder will be registered as a sex offender for ten years.
The sheriff condemned Ryder’s actions, stating, “You had images featuring women having sexual relations with an extraordinary range of animals, as well as some of the most extraordinarily vile material I’ve ever had the misfortune of viewing.
You need help, but that won’t undo the damage done to the children and women involved.
The only way to protect the public worldwide is to impose an extended sentence.” In a related case from November 2012, Ryder admitted to possessing hundreds of child abuse images on his computer over an 11-year period.
The authorities found more than 4,000 images and 97 minutes of video depicting child abuse, with the material spanning from 2000 to 2011.
The images ranged from levels one to five on the Copine scale, indicating varying degrees of severity.
Ryder also pleaded guilty to downloading indecent images of children over a nine-year period.
The court was told that Ryder’s actions had been ongoing for over a decade, highlighting a long history of offending.
Despite the severity of the evidence, Ryder’s defense requested that he be released on bail pending sentencing.
Sheriff Davidson agreed to defer the sentencing for one week to allow the Crown to prepare a comprehensive background report on Ryder’s crimes, ensuring that the court could fully understand the extent of his offenses before passing judgment.
