DUNDEE MAN FACES LENGTHY JAIL AFTER TERRIFYING ATTACK ON GIRLFRIEND
A man who viciously assaulted his girlfriend before driving off at 50mph with her clinging to the bonnet of his BMW has been informed that he faces a lengthy prison sentence.Ryan McEwan left Cheryl Walker lying motionless in the middle of Dundee’s Arklay Street and sped away, only to return as witnesses provided her with first aid, shouting, “you deserve it.” CCTV footage captured McEwan attempting to forcibly remove Miss Walker from the car before repeatedly striking her on the head.
A resident in a nearby flat pleaded with him to stop, but he responded, “She’s not getting out of the car – what am I supposed to do?” Subsequently, he sped off with her on the bonnet, with witnesses describing her screaming and his car's wheels spinning with tyres smoking.
A sheriff told McEwan he would face a ‘significant jail sentence’ when he returns to court next month.
Prosecutor Eilidh Robertson stated that McEwan, who has previous convictions for abusing Miss Walker, had been at a meal with her and his father earlier that evening.
She explained that an argument broke out as they drove away, with Miss Walker wanting to go home and McEwan wanting to visit a friend.
He got out of the car with her handbag and kicked it down the street, after which she locked herself in the vehicle.
McEwan then managed to re-enter the car, grabbing her by the hair and attempting to drag her out before punching her repeatedly on the head.
Miss Walker then exited the car and attempted to damage the windscreen wipers by standing on the bonnet.
McEwan then reversed at speed while she screamed for help, driving off at around 40 to 50 mph with smoke coming from his brakes.
She managed to throw herself off the bonnet into the roadway, screaming in pain as he drove away.
She was subsequently taken to hospital by ambulance but avoided serious injuries.
McEwan, aged 25 and currently detained at Perth, pleaded guilty to assaulting Cheryl Walker and to a charge of culpably and recklessly endangering her life on July 22 on Arklay Street, Dundee.
The court postponed sentencing until January to await social work reports, with McEwan remanded in custody in the meantime.
