RONALD SMITH SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR CHILD RAPE IN DUNDEE
A man from Dundee, Ronald Smith, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after a jury at the High Court found him guilty of committing three heinous acts of child rape.The conviction stems from a series of disturbing incidents involving a 13-year-old girl, which took place over a period spanning from February 9 to January 1, 2021.
According to court records, Smith engaged in multiple sexual assaults against the young victim inside his vehicle at Riverside Pavilion in Dundee.
These assaults occurred on several occasions, with the young girl subjected to Smith’s barbaric acts in the confined space of his car.
The assaults did not cease there; in January 2021, Smith also committed a further act of rape at an address within Dundee, adding to the gravity of his crimes.
The trial, which concluded last month, was notably swift, with jurors taking only thirty minutes to reach a unanimous verdict of guilt.
The victim, a brave young girl, provided crucial evidence during the proceedings, appearing via video monitor in a closed court session.
Her testimony detailed the horrific acts committed by Smith, shedding light on the severity of his crimes and the impact on her life.
Following the conviction, Judge Lady Drummond KC handed down a substantial sentence of 13 years, which includes an extended period of three years beyond the initial ten-year prison term.
This extension is to ensure that Smith remains under supervision for a longer duration after his release.
Additionally, Smith has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
In her remarks, Lady Drummond KC emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating, “It was raping a 13-year-old girl in 2020 and 2021.
These are the most serious sexual offences.” She further underscored the necessity of a significant custodial sentence, asserting, “The only sentence that is appropriate is imprisonment for a significant period.”
