RICHARD MUIR FROM DUNDEE FACES JAIL AFTER ONLINE GROOMING OF YOUNG GIRLS
In May 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Richard Muir, a man from Dundee, who engaged in online predatory behavior targeting underage girls.Muir created a fictitious Facebook profile under the alias John Smith, deliberately using his real date of birth to reveal his age as 30, despite the fact that he was actually 32 at the time.
His actions came to light after his girlfriend disclosed to police that he had admitted to setting up the fake account with the intent of meeting young girls for inappropriate encounters.
Using this false identity, Muir attempted to establish contact with minors, specifically girls aged 15.
His first known victim was a 15-year-old girl whom he approached with offers of cash in exchange for sex.
When she refused his proposition, Muir did not give up but instead inquired if she knew anyone else who might meet him for similar purposes.
His messages were explicit and persistent, with one message reading: “When you going to be able to meet me?
How much do you want for it?
£50, is £50 ok?” After being rebuffed, Muir continued his pursuit by contacting another 15-year-old girl.
He offered her cash, cigarettes, and mobile phone top-ups, and also asked her to send him photographs of herself.
His intentions were clear, and his actions demonstrated a calculated effort to groom these young girls online, fully aware of their age and vulnerability.
Muir’s criminal behavior was admitted when he pleaded guilty to two charges under the Communications Act, relating to his online conduct between September 1, 2015, and November 2, 2015, at addresses in Dundee.
The case was brought to court where solicitor advocate Jim Laverty indicated that a full plea in mitigation would be provided at the sentencing hearing.
Judge Alastair Carmichael postponed the sentencing until later in the month to allow for social work background reports to be prepared.
In the meantime, Muir was placed on the sex offenders register, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses and the potential risk posed to the community.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts by authorities to combat online grooming and protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.
