REUBEN TAVARES: HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE IN HULL AND PORTUGAL REVEALED IN COURT
In a chilling case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Hull, a man named Reuben Tavares, aged 37, has been found guilty of a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young children across two countries.The disturbing details of his offenses emerged during a court hearing at Hull Crown Court, where the full extent of his depravity was laid bare.
Reuben Tavares, who resides on Avenue Crescent in west Hull, was implicated in a long-standing campaign of abuse that spanned over a decade, beginning in his home country of Portugal before continuing in the United Kingdom.
His criminal activities involved targeting four innocent children, two in Portugal and two in the UK, subjecting them to sexual assault and coercing them into acts that have left lifelong scars.
The police investigation was triggered when authorities raided Tavares's residence and uncovered a collection of horrifying photographs.
Among these images were explicit pictures of him raping a five-year-old girl, a discovery that shocked everyone involved in the case.
The images depicted not only the assault on the young girl but also showed him engaging in sexual acts with other children, which he kept as a sick form of memorabilia.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor David Gordon detailed the extent of Tavares's crimes, which included 37 separate offenses spread across three indictments.
As the graphic details were read aloud, witnesses and spectators watched in horror.
One man, overwhelmed by the revelations, was seen fleeing the courtroom in distress and collapsing on the concourse outside Hull Crown Court.
Mr.
Gordon recounted that Tavares's abuse began in Portugal, where he first targeted a young girl.
His predatory behavior then escalated to include a young boy and girl, whom he sexually assaulted simultaneously.
The court heard that he forced the young girl to watch pornography and attempted to rape the boy on multiple occasions.
The prosecutor explained that Tavares would encourage the children to kiss him and, despite their protests and pleas to stop, he continued his assault.
One particularly disturbing aspect of the case involved the boy being present during the abuse of the girl, with Tavares instructing him to masturbate at the same time.
The young victims, overwhelmed and frightened, expressed their desire to confide in someone, but they feared being accused of lying.
Their innocence was exploited and shattered by Tavares’s actions, leaving deep emotional scars.
A father of one of the victims described the devastating impact of the case on his life.
He stated, “My life has been destroyed.
Since this bomb exploded in our lives I can’t sleep thinking about what happened.
I can’t escape the shadow of guilt for not realizing sooner.
I am very afraid he will be sent back to Portugal where he will serve very little time.
He is a very, very, very dangerous man and I am consumed with the desire to make him suffer.
That is part of the reason why I can’t sleep and think about how it is possible to commit such evil acts against my children.” The investigation also revealed that Tavares had accessed and possessed a significant amount of illegal images.
In May of the previous year, authorities seized electronic devices from his home, including a hard drive and a Samsung mobile phone.
Analysis of these devices uncovered numerous images depicting Tavares engaging in sexual acts with children.
The images were taken in his own living room, and he admitted responsibility when questioned in July last year, confirming that he recognized himself in the photographs.
The photographs and videos found on his devices were particularly disturbing.
They included 197 images of Category A material, 35 of Category B, and 120 of Category C, all related to his second and third victims.
Additionally, Tavares was found to possess approximately 1,800 images of Category A material, downloaded over a span of 15 years from May 2005 to May 2020.
He was also charged with possessing prohibited images depicting bestiality.
Judge David Tremberg delivered a stern sentence, condemning Tavares for leaving his victims to “live in the shadow of his depravity.” The judge emphasized that despite the victims’ pleas for him to stop, Tavares continued his abuse, causing them significant emotional and physical harm.
Tavares was sentenced to a total of 22 years in prison, with five-and-a-half years for each victim, to be served consecutively.
He was also handed a four-year extended license period and was ordered to serve half of his sentence in custody before being eligible for parole consideration.
Judge Tremberg concluded by highlighting the persistent and repeated nature of Tavares’s offenses, noting the vulnerability of his victims and their inability to speak out due to fear and shame.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child abuse and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in bringing such offenders to justice.
