July 2011 Text snares child abuser A SECURITY guard who sexually assaulted a young girl was brought to justice when she texted her mother about the abuse. One text by the 11-year-old revealed the location of her diary, which detailed Raymond Paterson’s offending. The 66-year-old, of 26th Avenue, north Hull, was jailed for six years by Recorder Simon Bourne-Arton QC. The victim’s mum, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: “I hope every day of his sentence feels like a life sentence to him. “In my opinion, it is my daughter who has got the life sentence and not him. “I don’t think the sentence is long enough for the shocking things he did.” The woman was concerned about an initial message received from her daughter, which she sent because it was too difficult for her to talk about. She said: “I asked her what was wrong and she sent another text saying ‘Mummy there’s a letter upstairs in my drawer’. “I ran up the stairs and tried to find the letter. “All I could hear was my heart beating and I searched her room frantically trying to find it. “I then found her diary and started reading bits of it. I only needed to read two lines and I ran back downstairs and called the police.” Paterson worked as a security guard and was responsible for guarding the Princes Royal Hospital in east Hull. He pleaded guilty to nine counts of sexual activity with a child on the day of his trial at Hull Crown Court. The Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence on a count of rape. The victim’s mother said: “The police were brilliant. She was ready to give evidence at the trial, but thankfully he pleaded guilty on the day it was due to start. “She has been very brave and is hopefully now putting it behind her.”
