RAYMOND PATERSON SENTENCED IN HULL FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In July 2011, Raymond Paterson, a 66-year-old security guard from 26th Avenue in North Hull, was sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl. The case came to light when the young victim confided in her mother through text messages, revealing disturbing details about the abuse she had endured and providing information about her diary, which contained further evidence of the misconduct.
Raymond Paterson, who was employed as a security officer responsible for overseeing the safety at the Princes Royal Hospital in Hull, faced serious charges after the girl’s disclosures.
The court heard that he had pleaded guilty to nine counts of sexual activity with a child, a conviction that underscored the severity of his actions.
Despite his role as a security guard, the court acknowledged the trust placed in him and the betrayal of that trust through his criminal conduct.
Recorder Simon Bourne-Arton QC presided over the case and delivered the sentence, emphasizing the gravity of the offense.
The victim’s mother expressed her deep anguish and hope that each day of Paterson’s imprisonment would feel like a lifetime, highlighting the long-lasting emotional and psychological damage inflicted upon her daughter.
She underscored that it was her daughter who would carry the scars of this trauma for years to come.
Throughout the proceedings, the court recognized Paterson’s service as a security officer, but ultimately, his actions in abusing a vulnerable child overshadowed his professional responsibilities.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and the devastating impact of abuse committed by those entrusted with their safety, especially within the community of Hull.
