December 2016 Odd job man hugged and kissed young sisters A paedophile odd job man convicted by a jury of sexually assaulting two young sisters is still refusing to accept his guilt. Raymond Bolton, 62, whose previous convictions include child abduction and ten sex offences against girls, was convicted of assaulting the sisters while they were playing near a west Hull shop he was renovating in summer. Judge Mark Bury said he was convicted on “strong evidence” at his Hull Crown Court trial earlier this month, which included being separately identified by both girls. He also breached a sexual harm prevention order, which police had been granted with the specific aim of protecting children from his abuse. But when Bolton was brought back to court to be sentenced, it was revealed he was still maintaining his innocence. The judge ruled he was dangerous and gave him an extended sentence. Referring to a pre-sentence report, the judge said to Bolton’s barrister, Charlotte Baines: “Not a helpful document for the defendant, is it?” Miss Baines said: “No, but I didn’t anticipate it would be.” “He still says he didn’t do it,” the judge said. Jailing Bolton for three years, the judge told him: “You were convicted on what I regard as strong evidence, identified by both girls at identification procedures. “Your probation report is littered with denials, excuses and platitudes. You continue to deny the offences, saying you weren’t there. “I have come to the conclusion you are a dangerous offender, a person who poses a significant risk of causing serious harm to the public, by public I mean young females, by the commission of further specified sexual offences. “You appear to pay lip service to the requirements of rehabilitation.” The girls had been able to describe distinctive tattoos on Bolton’s arms and his discoloured teeth, while CCTV showed his car leaving the area after the assaults. The girls had been playing in the area at the time, and Bolton, of Hessle Road, west Hull, called the younger sister into the shop. After asking her name, Bolton hugged her, kissed her on the mouth, then sexually assaulted her. She told her sister, who went into the shop and asked Bolton why he had done it. He then followed the older sister into a passageway and assaulted her. The judge said: “There is clear evidence from the CCTV footage, and [her] account, that you followed her into that passage, where you hugged her, kissed her on the forehead and told her that you loved her. “You realised that you’d overstepped the mark and went back to the shop, locked it up and drove off.” Claire Holmes, prosecuting, said the girl had told Bolton: “I don’t love you.” He said: “It don’t matter.” Bolton, originally from the West Midlands, received a “significant” prison sentence after being convicted of ten offences of indecently assaulting a female under 16 at Warwick Crown Court in 1997. He was later jailed for two-and-a-half years for child abduction. He must serve at least two years in jail before he can apply for release on licence. Bolton walked briskly out of the dock and had to be told to slow down by a custody officer. December 2016 Paedophile found guilty of sex offences An odd job man is to be assessed for dangerousness after being convicted of sexually assaulting two young sisters who were playing near a shop he was renovating. Raymond Bolton, 62, of Hessle Road, west Hull claimed he had never met the girls and told police he could not remember whether he was at the shop that day, despite being arrested and interviewed just six days later. But he was convicted by a jury of two counts of sexually assaulting a child under 13, and breaching a sexual harm prevention order, after a five-day trial at Hull Crown Court. The nine men and three women of the jury had been told he was previously convicted of ten offences of indecently assaulting a female under 16 at Warwick Crown Court in March 1997. After delivering their verdicts, they learnt yesterday he had also been convicted of child abduction. Judge Mark Bury said the circumstances in which he assaulted the sisters in west Hull this summer were “worrying”, and given his previous convictions, ordered a report to assess whether Bolton should be treated as dangerous, which could affect the time he serves in prison. The court heard Bolton assaulted the youngest girl in the shop after hugging her and kissing her on the lips. When her sister went to question him about it, he hugged and kissed her as well, telling her he “loved her” after following her into an alley. They confided in their mother days later, and were able to describe distinctive tattoos on Bolton’s arms, and his discoloured teeth. The judge told him: “Raymond Bolton, stand up. You have been convicted on what I regard as compelling evidence of two offences of indecent assault of a child under 13. “The assaults themselves were not the most serious, but the circumstances in which you came to commit them are, in my view, worrying, particularly when considering your background, your previous convictions for committing offences like this, and more serious offences. “It seems to me you do have at the moment a clear and present sexual interest in girls under the age of 16. “Before I sentence you, therefore, I require a report from the probation service to help me in the assessment of whether you are a dangerous offender or not. “Rest assured, Mr Bolton, that the sentence I will impose in two weeks time will be a custodial sentence. The only issue is the length of that sentence.” Bolton was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on December 23.
