PAUL EDWARDS AND SHOCKING RAPE IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE

A football coach from Gloucestershire who was convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl in 2006 has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Paul Edwards, aged 62, of Marling Crescent, Farmhill, Stroud, appeared before Gloucester Crown Court on Friday, August 4, for sentencing proceedings.

During the hearing, the presiding judge, Recorder Neil Millard, delivered a stark and serious message to Edwards, stating, "That girl's life has been changed forever because you raped her." The court was also informed that Edwards had been placed on the sex offender register for life and was now legally barred from working in any capacity involving children.

The prosecution, led by Giles Nelson, provided details of the incident that occurred in the summer of 2006.

According to Nelson, the victim, a 15-year-old girl, had an argument with her father that day, which prompted her to seek refuge at the home of acquaintances in Minchinhampton, a village near Stroud in Gloucestershire.

The girl was visibly distressed upon her arrival, and those she sought help from provided her with comfort and reassurance.

Arrangements were made for her to spend the night at the residence.

It was in this context that Edwards, who was also present in the house, invited the girl to share his bed.

The following morning, she woke up to find Edwards engaging in sexual activity with her.

The girl confided in her sister the next day, revealing that she had been raped.

Nelson emphasized that at the time of the assault, the girl was asleep and unable to give consent, highlighting her vulnerability and the fact that she was a minor.

As such, the act was a clear violation and an assault on a child.

The victim eventually reported the incident to authorities in 2020.

Edwards was first tried in January of the previous year, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict, leading to the discharge of the case.

A retrial was subsequently held at Cirencester Court in June of this year, resulting in Edwards's conviction.

In a statement given during the trial, the victim described the night of the assault as "one of absolute terror." She expressed her pain and frustration, saying, "Whatever happens to Edwards now, it will never be enough for what he did to me that night.

He has lived a lie for the past 17 years." She also shared her struggles with counseling, revealing that some sessions had become overwhelming for her, but she now hopes to resume therapy following Edwards’s sentencing.

Addressing Edwards directly, Judge Neil Millard condemned his actions and character, stating, "You had been a football coach in the local community for much of your life.

Your victim was vulnerable.

She was distressed.

You took advantage of her.

You were drunk.

Your life changed that day because of you.

We now know you are a rapist, a child rapist." The judge’s words underscored the gravity of the crime and its devastating impact on the victim.

In defense of Edwards, Virginia Cornwall argued that his drinking on the day of the offense was at the core of his behavior.

She emphasized his longstanding role as a community football coach and expressed her hope that the jury’s verdict would help the victim find some closure.

Nonetheless, the court's sentence reflected the severity of the crime, and Edwards was now mandated to serve the prison term, while also facing lifelong reporting and restrictions due to his conviction.
