MATTHEW DICKENS AND SHOCKING RAPE CASE IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE
Law enforcement officials have expressed their respect and admiration for the resilience demonstrated by a woman who was the victim in a serious sexual assault case that recently went to trial in Gloucestershire. The case culminated in a guilty verdict handed down by a jury at Gloucester Crown Court last week.
On Friday, 15 September, the court found Matthew Dickens, aged 25 and residing on Greet Road in Winchcombe, guilty of two counts of rape committed against the same woman during an incident that took place in 2020.
The proceedings revealed that Dickens had initially established contact with the victim through a messaging application, which eventually led to a face-to-face meeting.
Following their initial contact, Dickens met the woman along with one of her friends at a local bar.
The group spent some time together before Dickens accompanied the woman back to her residence.
During her testimony, the victim admitted that she could not clearly recall the exact moment she became undressed.
However, she recounted that Dickens then proceeded to assault her twice, during which he also held her throat, creating a terrifying and traumatic experience.
Detective Constable Rob Brown, who led the investigation, publicly acknowledged the profound impact of Dickens’ actions on the victim.
He stated, “Dickens subjected the victim to a terrifying ordeal that will deeply impact her for the rest of her life.” Brown also highlighted the additional trauma inflicted by Dickens’ subsequent denial of guilt, as he claimed the acts were consensual, forcing the victim to endure a court trial to establish the truth.
The officer praised the victim’s bravery and determination, noting that her willingness to support the case despite the emotional toll was commendable.
“I want to commend her bravery and determination to carry on supporting the case when it would have been understandable if she had decided not to put herself through it,” Brown said.
He further expressed relief that the jury reached a verdict of guilt in less than two hours, viewing this swift decision as a validation of the victim’s courage.
Brown emphasized the importance of this conviction, stating, “In the process, a dangerous individual has now been convicted at court and, potentially, prevented from wrecking other people’s lives.” He also issued a message to other victims of sexual assault, encouraging them to come forward.
“My message to anyone else who is a rape victim who is worried about coming forward is that you will be believed and that the criminal justice system is beginning to change, so please do report what has happened to you.
We are transforming the way that the CPS and police handle rape and sexual assault cases, and are working together to ensure that victims are supported throughout the prosecution process.” Matthew Dickens is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date, with authorities promising to continue their efforts to ensure justice is fully served in this troubling case.
