CHRISTOPHER HILL AND SHOCKING GROOMING IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE

A 50-year-old man named Christopher Hill has been sentenced to three years in prison after attempting to meet a girl he believed was just 14 years old, following a period of online grooming.

The incident took place in Gloucestershire, where Hill resided at The Tythings, Newent.

His actions came to light after an online paedophile hunter group, known for their efforts to combat child exploitation, used a decoy persona to trap him.

The court proceedings revealed that Hill pleaded guilty to three separate child sex offences during his appearance at Gloucester Crown Court.

The case was brought to light when the online group, operating out of Leeds under the name Predator Exposure, set up a fake profile to lure him into a conversation.

It was during this interaction that Hill was exposed as a predator attempting to engage with a decoy posing as a 14-year-old girl named Sophie.

According to the prosecution, Lucie Stoker, the court heard that the conversation between Hill and the decoy quickly moved to WhatsApp, a messaging platform known for its encryption, which facilitated more private communication.

Hill requested that Sophie send him a photograph of herself, and he also asked for images of her without clothes and some provocative pictures.

Throughout the exchanges, Hill expressed that he was falling in love with her and repeatedly urged her to reciprocate these feelings, despite the decoy’s responses indicating she was not interested.

The court was informed that arrangements were made for Sophie to travel alone from Leeds to Gloucestershire by train, with Hill instructing her to meet him at a nearby hotel.

He even sent her a copy of the hotel receipt to confirm the plans.

During the conversation, Hill explicitly told the decoy that she could expect to engage in sexual activities in various forms, revealing his predatory intent and behaviour.

The judge, James Watson KC, addressed Hill directly during sentencing, stating, "Not only had you encouraged and groomed and planned this meeting for penetrative sex, you had offered her incentives by how you would treat her and the presents and money you would give her after you had met her.

I have no doubt that had this been a real 14-year-old, you would have carried out what you proposed." The court emphasized the seriousness of Hill’s actions and his clear intent to exploit a minor.

In his defence, Catherine Spedding argued that Hill’s actions were driven by loneliness following the dissolution of his marriage and that he bitterly regrets what he had done.

She maintained that Hill had met Sophie on a standard social media platform and was not actively seeking out material or opportunities for such offences.

Hill was charged with attempting to communicate sexually with a child for gratification, attempting to facilitate a child sex offence through sexual activity involving penetration with a 14-year-old girl, and attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

He pleaded guilty to all charges.

The court sentenced Hill to a prison term of three years and 11 months.

Additionally, he was subjected to a 20-year sexual harm prevention order, which severely restricts his access to the internet and online communication tools.

Hill was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and was permanently barred from working with children and vulnerable adults in the future, reflecting the gravity of his offences and the need to protect potential victims in Gloucestershire and beyond.
