A notorious sex offender from Hull, Owen Evers, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple heinous crimes involving a young girl. The case, which has shocked the local community, revealed the extent of Evers' disturbing actions and the profound impact on his victim.
Owen Evers, aged 61 and residing on Rushworth Close in the Bransholme area of Hull, was accused of committing a series of sexual offences that included two counts of rape, six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor, and four counts of inciting a child to participate in sexual acts.
Despite initially denying all charges, Evers was convicted on all counts by a jury after a lengthy deliberation process that lasted over eleven hours across three days.
The jury's verdict was mostly unanimous, with ten of the twelve verdicts reached by an 11 to 1 majority, and the remaining two by a 10 to 2 majority.
During the trial, Evers was released on bail but was remanded into custody last week following the verdicts, awaiting sentencing.
The young girl, whose identity remains protected, provided a heartfelt statement describing the profound trauma she endured.
She expressed her deep sadness about her situation, stating, "My world turned upside down.
What had been happening to me was so wrong." She described the memories as haunting, with recurring nightmares that make her feel physically sick.
Despite her efforts to suppress these memories, she fears that the trauma has left an indelible mark on her psyche, making everyday life difficult and tainted by her experiences.
The victim conveyed her determination not to let her suffering define her future, emphasizing her resolve to rebuild her life despite the severe psychological harm inflicted upon her.
She described the ordeal as a "complete nightmare" and expressed her hope that she can move beyond the pain caused by Evers' actions.
Prosecutor Andrew Petterson highlighted Evers' attempts to obstruct justice, noting that the defendant took measures to prevent the girl from reporting the abuse to authorities or supporting the prosecution.
The prosecutor emphasized the vulnerability of the young victim, underscoring the gravity of the offences.
Defense lawyer Dale Brook acknowledged the seriousness of the crimes, stating, "The defendant has been convicted of the most serious offences and he is going to receive a very lengthy prison sentence." He also pointed out that Evers had no prior convictions, which was considered during sentencing.
Judge Alexander Menary described the case as involving a "litany of sexual offending" and condemned Evers for exploiting the girl to commit what he called "insidious" acts.
The judge praised the victim for her honesty and resilience, noting her inability to cope with the trauma she experienced.
The judge characterized the offences as "deeply disturbing" and emphasized the severe psychological harm caused.
In addition to the prison sentence, Evers was subjected to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
As he was led away from the courtroom, he displayed a grin and waved to a supporter in the public gallery before making a gesture resembling a phone call, an act that drew attention to his demeanor during the proceedings.
