NORMAN GARTSHORE'S HORRIFIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN FIFE REVEALED
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Fife, Norman Gartshore, a mechanic from the region, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of heinous child sexual offenses spanning nearly a decade.The crimes, which took place at an address in Methil, involved two young girls and occurred over a period from 1976 to 1985, leaving a lasting scar on the victims and the community alike.
Gartshore, aged 53 at the time of sentencing, faced charges that included indecency and sexual assault against both victims.
Throughout the trial, he maintained his innocence, denying the allegations of indecency and refusing to admit to having engaged in sexual activity with the older girl when she was unable to consent.
Despite his denials, the evidence presented in court was overwhelming, leading to his conviction at Glasgow High Court on May 22.
The presiding judge, Lord Paul Arthurson, delivered a stern judgment, emphasizing the gravity of Gartshore’s actions.
He stated, “In the case of your principal victim, you engaged in a course of conduct of sexual abuse against her involving a very significant number of years of her childhood.
Put shortly, you engaged in penetrative sexual activity with two children, in conduct that was as despicable as it was deviant, and the purpose of the sentence which the court will impose upon you today is to punish you for these crimes.” Lord Arthurson also acknowledged Gartshore’s relatively young age during the period of offending and noted his conduct since then.
The court considered his life as an adult, including his family and employment history, and recognized that he appeared to show genuine remorse for his actions.
The judge highlighted that Gartshore had only recently begun to understand the “irreparable harm” caused by his misconduct.
The case was further compounded by a victim impact statement from one of the women, who was just nine years old when the abuse started.
She revealed that she had been “shunned” by her family after speaking out about her experiences.
Her words reflected the deep emotional scars left by Gartshore’s actions, as she expressed her ongoing feelings of being “used and abused, sexually.” The exposure of Gartshore’s crimes came after one of his victims, now aged 51, reached out via Facebook to the other victim, aged 44.
She disclosed that she had witnessed Gartshore molesting her friend when she was a young girl.
This revelation prompted the authorities to take action, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
Gartshore was sentenced to six years in prison and will be registered on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
The case underscores the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims who often suffer in silence for years before their voices are heard.
In a related case from April 2018, Gartshore faced similar allegations.
He was accused of abusing two childhood friends over a span of more than 30 years.
The older girl, whom he began abusing at the age of nine, testified that his misconduct escalated to sexual acts while she was asleep during her teenage years.
She also witnessed him molesting her younger friend, who was between five and seven years old at the time.
Gartshore admitted to touching the older girl on three occasions, including her back, leg, and bottom, but denied that his actions had progressed into sexual acts.
Nevertheless, the jury at the High Court in Edinburgh found him guilty of multiple charges of indecency and assault, including the abuse that occurred at the Methil address.
During sentencing, Lord Arthurson condemned Gartshore’s conduct, describing it as “grave and highly disturbing sexual offending against young girls.” The court rejected his request for bail, citing the seriousness of the crimes and the need to protect the community.
Gartshore was remanded into custody, with the judge warning that he would face a “substantial custodial sentence.” The case was further complicated by the social media revelations, where the victims communicated about their experiences.
One victim, now 51, had reached out to her friend through Facebook, revealing that she had seen Gartshore molest her as a child and had also been subjected to abuse herself.
The other victim, aged 44, expressed her regret, stating she had dealt with her trauma through counseling.
Gartshore’s defense claimed that he was “discovering how things work” and admitted to hurting the victims but denied any sexual attraction to young girls.
He told police that he was “a wee bit infatuated” with the older girl when he was younger, but insisted that the victims were lying about the severity of the abuse.
Despite his claims, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him, and he was placed on the sex offenders’ register, marking a lifetime of monitoring for this convicted predator from Fife.
