PAUL DOCHERTY FROM FIFE SHOCKS COMMUNITY WITH UNDERAGE SEX AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Fife, Paul Docherty, a man originally from Cupar and now residing in Kirkcaldy, has been found guilty of serious sexual offenses involving a minor and the possession of a vast collection of indecent images of children.

Docherty's criminal activities came to light after a series of disturbing revelations and police investigations.

The case dates back to incidents that occurred between December 2008 and January 2010, during which Docherty engaged in unlawful sexual acts with a girl who was just over 13 years old at the time.

The relationship reportedly began after the two connected on the social networking site Bebo, where they exchanged messages and texts before eventually meeting in person.

According to court records, Docherty, then aged 29, and the young girl from West Fife, started communicating online and via mobile phones.

Their interactions escalated over time, culminating in sexual encounters in various locations around Fife, including Docherty’s home in Cupar and in his car at different sites, including a spot near a cemetery close to Blairhall.

The girl, who was in her second year at school, initially claimed to her parents that she was not involved in a sexual relationship with Docherty, but her suspicions were later confirmed by police.

The case was brought to a head when the girl’s mother grew suspicious of her daughter’s activities.

Concerned about the nature of her daughter’s relationship with Docherty, she contacted the authorities.

Police then executed a search warrant at Docherty’s residence, where they seized his computer among other items.

During questioning at Glenrothes police station, Docherty admitted to the allegations, acknowledging that he and the girl had engaged in sexual activity and that their relationship was more than just a friendship.

Further investigations revealed a disturbing collection of digital material stored on Docherty’s computer.

The police found a total of 4,321 indecent images of children, ranging from one to four on the Copine scale, which measures the severity of such images.

Additionally, 185 indecent videos were recovered, also depicting children within the same age range.

The majority of the children in these images and videos were girls aged between six and 14 years old.

Docherty’s actions were not limited to the possession of illicit images.

He also admitted to taking, permitting, or making indecent photographs of children at his Cupar address between June 28, 2008, and February 27 of the following year.

His offenses included meeting the girl and sending her texts, despite being on bail with strict conditions not to contact her.

The girl, who was just past her 13th birthday when their relationship began, described their interactions as progressing into a sexual relationship, which she believed was consensual and protected.

Legal proceedings took place at Dunfermline Sheriff Court in April, where Docherty, then aged 31, pleaded guilty to multiple charges.

These included unlawful sexual activity with a minor, possession of indecent images, and meeting the girl while on bail.

The court heard that Docherty and the girl’s relationship, which started as an online friendship, eventually turned physical, with sexual encounters occurring in various locations around Fife.

His solicitor, who chose not to disclose his name, argued that Docherty had no contact with the girl for several years prior to their online exchanges.

The solicitor claimed that the relationship was initiated after a period of no contact and that Docherty believed the girl was still underage at the time of their meetings.

He also stated that both parties appeared to hope the relationship would continue once the girl reached the age of consent, which is 16 in Scotland.

Despite these claims, the court found Docherty guilty of all charges.

Sheriff Ian Dunbar sentenced him to a period of imprisonment, with a further two years on license following his release.

Additionally, Docherty’s name has been permanently added to the sex offenders register, reflecting the severity of his crimes and ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities in the future.
