NEIL MORTON SHOCKS DUNDEE WITH SEXUAL ABUSE OF EIGHT-YEAR-OLD GIRL AT LOCAL CHURCH
In a deeply troubling case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Dundee, Neil Morton, a churchwarden known for his involvement in local religious activities, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after admitting to sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl under his care. The incident, which took place over a period spanning from December 2010 to July 2012, has highlighted the devastating impact of betrayal of trust within a community that values its moral and spiritual integrity.
According to court records, Morton, aged 65 and residing at Pitroddie Gardens in Dundee, engaged in inappropriate sexual acts with the young girl while she was under his supervision, looking after her for her parents.
The abuse occurred in the privacy of his home, specifically within a bedroom, during two separate occasions over a period of nearly two years.
The court heard that the abuse only came to light after the girl confided in her parents, expressing her reluctance to return to Morton’s house.
This revelation prompted her parents to seek help from authorities, leading to police investigations.
During police interviews, the girl disclosed that Morton was “doing things that were wrong,” a statement that was corroborated by her subsequent testimony.
In her victim impact statement, she described feeling “confused, embarrassed, scared and vulnerable” as a result of the assaults, illustrating the profound emotional and psychological toll inflicted by Morton’s actions.
The court was also informed that Morton had been involved in caring for the girl since she was a baby, which added a layer of betrayal given his trusted position in her life.
Neil Morton’s legal team attempted to argue for leniency, suggesting that he could be better managed under a community order rather than imprisonment.
However, Sheriff Richard Davidson was unequivocal in his judgment, emphasizing that a custodial sentence was “unavoidable” due to the severity of Morton’s breach of trust and the harm caused.
The sheriff highlighted that Morton’s behavior was “disturbing” and that his lack of explanation for his actions only compounded the seriousness of the case.
In addition to the prison sentence, Morton was ordered to be monitored on an extended basis for two years following his release and was placed on the sex offender register for a period of ten years.
Sheriff Davidson underscored the importance of imposing strict penalties to prevent such incidents and to serve as a deterrent to others who might abuse positions of trust within the community.
Commenting on the case, Sheriff Davidson stated, “It is impossible to overstate the harm that you have done to this girl and the rest of her family in general.
From your discussions with the psychologist who compiled a report, I see you offer no explanation for your behavior.” He further expressed his disappointment that Morton, who had no prior convictions, had reached this stage in life with such a grave breach of moral conduct.
The sheriff concluded by emphasizing the need for appropriate punishment to ensure the safety and well-being of children in Dundee and beyond.
In a related hearing held in April 2013, Morton had already admitted to the charges, with the court initially deferring sentencing to gather further psychological assessments.
The court was told that Morton had helped care for the girl since she was an infant, which made his betrayal even more shocking.
The victim, now eight years old, had provided a clear account of the abuse, stating that Morton had “done things that were wrong” and that she had told him she did not like it during the second incident, which she said had not happened again afterward.
The court heard that Morton expressed no excuse for his actions, and his defense acknowledged his remorse.
As the case concludes, the community of Dundee is left to grapple with the profound implications of this betrayal, and authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance and safeguarding children from harm by trusted individuals.
