DUNDEE TREE CUTTER SENTENCED FOR THREATENING ESTRANGED WIFE
Neil Cowper, aged 36, is accused of threatening to stab his estranged wife during a phone call.The Dundee Sheriff Court heard that Cowper, a first-time offender, demanded money from Debbie Cowper in a series of threatening calls last November.
The court was told that Mrs.
Cowper received a call from her husband where he was described as 'quite irate' and abusive.
Cowper shouted, 'Give me my money,' and later, he became more aggressive, calling her a 'fat cow.' Ultimately, Cowper stated he was going to stab her.
The police traced Cowper after the incident, and he was cautioned, arrested, and admitted to making those comments.
Cowper pled guilty to sending electronic messages, making phone calls, and leaving voicemails where he shouted abusive language and threatened violence on November 12 of the previous year.
His solicitor explained that Cowper had been unemployed for a year due to conflicts with his previous employer, and the issues escalated over a dispute regarding child contact.
The court initially considered deferring sentence and calling for social work reports but decided to deal with the case immediately by imposing a fine.
The sheriff described the case as a significant violation of the Communications Act, highlighting the criminal nature of Cowper's language and threats.
Since this was Cowper's first offense, he was fined £240, with a warning that any future domestic crimes could result in a custodial sentence.
The sentence would be a matter of record as a domestic crime.
