MATTHEW THOMSON AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN HULL
A man described as a 'pathetic and isolated' individual has been sentenced to prison after attempting to meet a teenager for sex in Hull.Matthew Thomson, aged 36, residing on Littleham Close in the Bransholme area, admitted to multiple charges related to child exploitation and possession of indecent images.
Thomson pleaded guilty to searching for and possessing indecent images of young boys on the internet.
Additionally, he was involved in grooming what he believed to be a 14-year-old boy named David on the widely used homosexual dating app Grindr.
However, the profile of 'David' was not genuine; it was a fake account created by the vigilant paedophile hunting organization, Keeping Our Kids Safe.
During the hearing at Hull Crown Court, it was outlined that Thomson engaged in a conversation with the fake profile after being informed that David was only 14 years old.
The interaction continued, during which Thomson attempted to arrange a meeting with the supposed minor for sexual activity.
It was only later that Thomson realized the profile was a deceitful construct.
Recognizing that he was caught in a trap, he contacted Keeping Our Kids Safe, who responded by issuing an ultimatum: either Thomson turns himself in to the police or they would publicly release his personal information via their Facebook page.
Judge Roger Thomas QC sentenced Thomson, emphasizing his awareness of the deception: 'At some point, he was made aware that this was a setup designed to discover individuals like him.' The judge highlighted that Thomson sought to extricate himself from the predicament by reaching out to the vigilante group, which then gave him an ultimatum to surrender to authorities.
In an investigation that garnered public attention, Thomson met with the police outside Clough Road Police Station in May of the previous year.
The paedophile hunters filmed him outside the station before he voluntarily handed himself over.
During the police interview, Thomson admitted that after discovering 'David' was only 14, he had suggested acts including kissing and touching, progressing to sexual activity.
Thomson’s background revealed that he was a Beaver Scout Leader, responsible for supervising boys aged between six and eight.
His role within the scouting organization had, until recently, been unblemished, with no concerns raised by parents or colleagues.
Nevertheless, the court was shown evidence of his private computer, which contained images classified as indecent.
Specifically, authorities recovered seven Category B images and sixteen Category C images, though the images were obscured with black rectangles covering the children’s private parts, possibly as an attempt to hinder software used for detection.
Furthermore, forensic analysis of Thomson's computer uncovered searches relating to indecent imagery involving very young boys and themes linked to scouting.
The police also found that Thomson explicitly searched for terms such as 'young gay boys,' 'very, very, very young boys,' and notably, 'Scouts.' Despite Thomson’s claims to the probation service that he had no sexual interest in children, the evidence suggested otherwise.
Prosecutor Mr.
Philip Evans pointed out the manipulative nature of the images, noting the use of black rectangles to conceal private parts, perhaps to evade detection software.
The court was also told that Thomson intentionally searched for material depicting children in sexual contexts, raising serious concerns about his motives.
Judge Thomas described Thomson as a 'lonely, pathetic individual' who lives with his mother and brother.
The judge criticized his online activity and involvement with scouting, suggesting that his interest in young boys was deeply troubling.
Despite his participation in the Scout movement, which ideally promotes safety and integrity, there were suspicions that Thomson's involvement may have stemmed from unhealthy interests.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Thomas imposed a 12-month prison term and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
He stressed the severity of the case, emphasizing that such conduct is taken very seriously by the judiciary.
The judge made it clear that those who access indecent material or attempt to offend against minors face custodial sentences.
Thomson was also ordered to register as a sex offender for a decade, underscoring the gravity of his offences.
