LUKE PIRIE FROM DUNDEE INVOLVED IN TRAGIC CRASH
Luke Pirie, aged 32 and residing on Broughty Ferry Road in Dundee, a man who was previously convicted of child homicide and released from prison, has now been accused of committing sexual offences and acts of severe domestic violence. In October 2017, Pirie, then 24, lost control of his Ford Focus in Coupar Angus, reaching a speed of 50mph and mounting the pavement, which resulted in the death of 2-year-old Harlow Edwards.
Pirie, known locally as a troublemaker with a notorious reputation, has been filmed on security cameras.
He previously received a conviction for killing Harlow.
Recently, he sent a threatening voicemail to his partner’s sister, vowing to “smash her f***ing face in.” He admitted to sending this threatening message in the early hours of August 20 this year.
At the age of 31, he was jailed in 2017 for the fatal incident involving the young girl while he was driving at high speed through Coupar Angus.
During the court hearing in Edinburgh, it was disclosed that prior to the crash, Pirie had sent several angry text messages and made phone calls to his then-girlfriend.
On Wednesday, Pirie appeared before Perth Sheriff Court and pleaded guilty to sending a voice note that was “grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing nature.” The court was informed that these messages were sent from an address in Invergowrie and formed part of a series of intoxicated, aggressive texts.
Sheriff Jennifer Bain KC sentenced Pirie to perform unpaid work and remarked, “Your record is far from exemplary.” Prosecutor Elizabeth Hodgson explained that the victim in this case was the sister of Pirie’s partner, who he had contacted multiple times early in the morning, shouting and swearing at her.
She noted that Pirie left ten voice messages, becoming increasingly angry and intoxicated as he continued.
In one, he threatened, “I’ll smash your f***ing face in if you talk to (his partner) again.” The police traced the messages back to him, and Pirie apologized, saying, “I was drunk.” Solicitor Linda Clark stated that all parties involved have since reconciled.
The court noted that Pirie’s behavior was influenced by alcohol at the time, involving offences such as carrying bladed articles, domestic abuse, and public indecency.
A man who was texting on his phone just moments before he caused the death of a two-year-old girl has been sentenced to six years in prison.
The incident occurred when Pirie lost control of his vehicle in Coupar Angus, hitting the pavement at 50mph and killing Harlow Edwards.
A 6-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl also sustained injuries.
Harlow’s mother, Sara, spoke outside Glasgow’s High Court, stating she hoped her daughter’s lovely face would serve as a warning to drivers to avoid texting while driving.
In her emotional statement, she expressed that although they appreciated the lengthy sentence, it does not come close to the lifelong grief they endure every day.
She described how losing her daughter in such a tragic, preventable accident has compounded their sorrow and hopes that her child’s face will remind motorists of their responsibility on the road, highlighting the dangers of speeding and distractions like texting.
