LEWIS BRODIE SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS FOR RAPE IN DUNDEE AND MONIFIETH
Lewis Brodie, a 28-year-old musician from Monifieth, Angus, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of three counts of rape.The heinous crimes took place over a span of nearly a decade, with the first assault occurring in Dundee at a house party in Broughty Ferry in May 2010.
Brodie’s victims included a 15-year-old girl who was asleep at the time of her attack, as well as two other women whom he assaulted in different locations within Dundee.
One of the most disturbing incidents involved Brodie raping a woman in February 2019 at her residence on Dens Road, Dundee.
According to court reports, Brodie initially engaged in consensual sex with her, but the situation turned violent when she withdrew her consent.
Despite her clear objection, Brodie persisted in trying to kiss her and ultimately raped her.
The third assault took place later that same year, in September 2019, involving a woman living in homeless accommodation.
Brodie, who was intoxicated, visited her late at night and committed the assault.
Throughout the trial held at the High Court in Dundee, jurors heard detailed testimonies from the victims, who demonstrated remarkable courage in coming forward.
The court was told that Brodie’s actions had a profound and damaging impact on each of them.
Some victims were so affected that they had to leave Dundee altogether, seeking safety and distance from their attacker.
During sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Ericht addressed Brodie directly, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
He acknowledged that Brodie had no previous convictions but highlighted the gravity of the three rapes, especially noting that the first victim was only 15 years old at the time.
The judge considered Brodie’s age at the time of the first offence and the moderate risk of reoffending, as outlined in the social work report.
However, he stressed that the repeated nature of the offences and the vulnerability of the victims warranted a substantial custodial sentence.
Lord Ericht also pointed out that Brodie’s attitude towards his victims was troubling, especially noting that Brodie had contacted police to complain about the victims posting about their experiences online.
This behavior was seen as indicative of his attitude towards his crimes and victims.
The judge further ordered Brodie to be placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely and imposed strict non-harassment orders, prohibiting him from contacting any of the victims for ten years.
Breaching these orders could result in further imprisonment.
In his remarks, Lord Ericht acknowledged the bravery of the victims and the profound impact of Brodie’s actions.
He emphasized that only a significant custodial sentence could reflect the seriousness of the crimes committed in Dundee and Monifieth.
The sentence was backdated to March 24, 2023, ensuring that Brodie remains incarcerated for the full duration of his eight-year term, with the additional legal restrictions in place to protect the victims from further harm.
