DUNDEE MAN AVOIDS PRISON AFTER VICIOUS DOMESTIC ASSAULT
A violent thug who battered his “second-class citizen” wife in Dundee after a trivial argument over a laptop has narrowly avoided a prison sentence.Larry Onaghise was criticised for the "vicious" and "sustained" assault.
Onaghise, 33, pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman by struggling violently, pushing her, slapping her, repeatedly punching her, seizing her neck, and attacking her while she was on the floor, at an address in Dundee on June 30 2024.
The court heard how the argument started around 9pm, with Onaghise making derogatory remarks and becoming enraged over the damaged laptop.
He then pushed her onto the floor and caused her to strike the door frame, after which she scratched his face in self-defense.
Tensions escalated when he pinned her against the wall by the neck and punched her at around 11pm, causing swelling to her jaw and pain.
She managed to escape and contact police but did not seek medical treatment or request a non-harassment order.
Onaghise, of Morgan Street, was sentenced by Dundee Sheriff Court to perform 270 hours of unpaid work and was placed on supervision for 12 months.
The sheriff described his conduct as "a nasty, vicious, sustained course of assault," and acknowledged crossing the custody threshold but decided against imprisonment, considering it would not aid rehabilitation or prevent future violence.
