JOSH BENNETT AND SHOCKING CHILD GROOMING AND ABDUCTION IN ROCHDALE
Josh Bennett, a resident of Underwood in Rochdale, has been convicted and sentenced for serious offences involving the exploitation of underage children and the use of his property as a refuge for teenagers who had gone missing from their homes.Bennett, born on November 17, 1996, faced multiple charges, including two counts of abduction and two counts of grooming.
His guilty plea was entered at an earlier hearing, and he was ultimately sentenced at Minshull Street Crown Court.
The court sentenced Bennett to a prison term of 40 months.
Additionally, he has been placed under a sexual offences prevention order, which imposes restrictions on his activities and contact.
Bennett is also required to register as a sex offender, ensuring that authorities monitor his compliance and restrict his future interactions.
Bennett’s criminal behaviour was first uncovered in December 2014 when someone with access to his Facebook account discovered numerous messages directed toward underage children aged between 12 and 15.
These messages were explicitly sexual in tone, with Bennett inviting the children to meet him at his flat for sexual encounters.
Despite the clear indications that his messages targeted minors, Bennett continued to pursue these children with sexual intent, fully aware they were underage.
There was no evidence that Bennett actually met these children in person or engaged in sexual activities with them.
Nonetheless, the messages were handed over to Rochdale Social Services, prompting a joint investigation led by Greater Manchester Police’s Sunrise Team, based in Rochdale, in collaboration with the local authority.
As the investigation advanced, authorities uncovered that Bennett had also allowed his flat to serve as a hideout and refuge for teenagers who had run away from their families or homes.
During these visits, Bennett would knowingly supply alcohol to the underage individuals, further endangering their welfare.
His actions not only facilitated their continued disappearance but also exposed these vulnerable young people to additional risks.
The day Bennett was arrested at his flat was particularly alarming.
Officers discovered a 15-year-old boy, one of the missing children, hiding inside a roof space within the flat.
This underscores the extent to which Bennett was willing to go to shelter children and evade law enforcement.
Detective Constable Ben Harris of the Sunrise Team commented on the severity of Bennett’s behaviour, emphasizing that Bennett's age suggests troubling signs of a sexual predilection toward children.
Harris also highlighted the danger posed by Bennett’s misconduct, noting that his conduct not only places vulnerable youths in peril but complicates law enforcement efforts to locate and assist missing children.
The detective praised the individual who initially reported Bennett's Facebook messages, stating that this tip-off was crucial in launching a thorough investigation that likely prevented further harm.
Harris remarked that the online messages showed that the children involved had recognized Bennett’s grooming attempts and had rebuffed his advances, which was a positive outcome and a testament to the awareness of the young victims.
The use of social media platforms for grooming and exploitation remains an ongoing concern.
Harris urged parents to be vigilant about their children’s online activity and to report any suspicious behaviour or conversations.
This case was part of a broader initiative known as Project Phoenix, a collaborative, multi-agency effort involving police, healthcare providers, local authorities, and third-sector organizations throughout Greater Manchester.
The project aims to protect young people from sexual exploitation and bring perpetrators like Bennett to justice.
The case against Josh Bennett underscores the importance of community vigilance and inter-agency cooperation in safeguarding children from exploitation and abuse.
His sentencing reflects the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing efforts to combat child grooming and abduction within the region.
