JOSEPH NICHOLSON CAUGHT IN DUNDEE IN SHOCKING CHILD SEX ABUSE CASE

A 40-year-old man named Joseph Nicholson was apprehended in Dundee following a covert police operation targeting online child exploitation.

The investigation revealed that Nicholson had been actively attempting to groom minors through popular social media platforms such as Kik and Snapchat.

Undercover officers monitored his online activity and uncovered disturbing communications in which he falsely presented himself as a duty manager working for a hotel chain.

During these interactions, Nicholson engaged in a series of highly inappropriate and predatory messages with profiles he believed to be underage children.

He repeatedly requested explicit photographs of minors in underwear, sent unsolicited images of himself, and exerted pressure on the minors to send videos and personal pictures.

These exchanges demonstrated a clear pattern of grooming behavior and sexual predation.

Following the police raid on Nicholson’s shared residence in Dundee, authorities uncovered a disturbing collection of illegal material.

The search revealed that Nicholson was storing videos of child sex abuse at an extremely depraved level, including Category A videos, which are considered the most serious form of child exploitation content.

The investigation also uncovered matching clothing that appeared in Nicholson’s online photos, linking his online persona to his real identity.

During proceedings at Dundee Sheriff Court, it was disclosed that Nicholson had exchanged numerous detailed and explicit sexual messages with the profiles between August and October 2023.

The messages, which were read aloud by the fiscal depute, showed Nicholson adopting the alias 'Lewis' and making explicit comments such as, “I wanna see everything cause I think you are cute AF,” while urging the minors to send provocative images.

In one particularly disturbing instance, Nicholson pressured a profile to record a video stating his name, further demonstrating his predatory intent.

When police searched Nicholson’s home, they found the matching clothing from his online photos and a series of illegal videos stored on his mobile device, which he had received through a group chat.

Nicholson admitted to attempting to communicate indecently with two minors via social media during the period from August to October 2023.

He pleaded guilty to these charges on the day of his trial, with sentencing deferred until July to allow for a social work report to be prepared.

As part of the legal proceedings, Nicholson’s bail was extended, and he is now officially registered as a sex offender.

His actions have led to a court-imposed sentence, and his inclusion on the sex offenders register underscores the severity of his criminal conduct.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predatory individuals like Nicholson in Dundee.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard how Nicholson engaged in numerous, in-depth sexual conversations between August and October 2023.

The profiles – named ‘Leon’ and ‘Ava’ – would reply with various child-like responses and questions.

Nicholson, who sent images of himself, said to the ‘boy’: “I don’t care if it’s more than a chat.

“You look cute.

You don’t strike me as the innocent type of person.” The court heard how Nicholson repeatedly pestered the child for images of him posing in underwear and continued to escalate the sexual remarks.

When speaking to ‘Ava’, Nicholson immediately asked for a picture of her face.

Nicolson said: “Just because most girls are either catfishing or scam bots.

Not sure your as innocent as you look.

What stuff do you normally do with guys on here.

I am sure not always clean haha.” Nicholson referenced showering and undressing in further ghastly messages.

Prosecutor Andrew Brown described a police raid on Nicholson’s home, during which a mobile phone was found with two Category A videos of child sex abuse material.

Nicholson said he received the files through a group chat.

According to his Linkedin profile, Nicholson claims to have worked in the security industry for more than 20 years and sat on the Children’s Panel between 2021 and 2023.

He also described himself as being a founding trustee and treasurer of the first Dundee Pride in 2018.

Sheriff George Way placed Nicholson on supervision for two years and ordered him to engage with the Tay Project and Moving Forward 2 Change programmes for sex offenders.

He is subject to the sex offenders register for the same period with the sentence imposed as a direct alternative to custody.
