JOHN WHITFIELD FROM WARINGTON SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE IN WARRINGTON PARK

In a disturbing incident that unfolded in broad daylight, a man identified as John Whitfield, aged 37 and residing on Layton Close in Birchwood, Warrington, was convicted of attempting to sexually assault a woman in a local park. The assault took place in July 2024, and the aftermath has led to a significant legal outcome, including a life sentence for Whitfield.

On that day, around 1:55 pm, the victim was enjoying a peaceful moment in the park with her young son. She had noticed Whitfield earlier, who was then accompanied by a friend. However, about ten minutes later, Whitfield left his companion and reappeared alone. Without warning, he approached the woman from behind and forcibly pulled her into a nearby wooded area. The attack was violent and aggressive, with Whitfield attempting to rape her. The woman fought back fiercely, kicking and biting him in an effort to escape, all while her son’s screams echoed nearby.

Despite the assault, she managed to break free from Whitfield’s grasp, grabbed her son, and hurriedly fled the scene. During her escape, she noticed Whitfield’s phone lying on the ground and seized the opportunity to take it. Whitfield, realizing his phone was missing, shouted after her, asking, “Where’s my phone?”

Following her escape, the woman sought help from a nearby passerby, who provided comfort and promptly contacted the police. She was able to give authorities a detailed description of Whitfield, which proved crucial in the subsequent investigation.

Law enforcement officials quickly traced Whitfield through the analysis of his phone. The device’s data led to his arrest within hours of the incident. He was taken into custody and brought to a police station for questioning.

Whitfield faced multiple charges, including attempted rape, sexual assault, and assault by penetration. He pleaded guilty to these charges at Liverpool Crown Court on August 28, 2024. The court proceedings culminated in a severe sentence, with Whitfield being sentenced to life imprisonment on February 28, 2025. The judge ordered that he serve a minimum of 4 years and 137 days before being eligible for parole. Additionally, upon release, Whitfield will be subject to indefinite licence conditions, meaning he can be returned to prison if he commits any further offenses.
