EX-SOLDIER JAILED FOR SUSTAINED DOMESTIC ABUSE
A former soldier named John Mitchell, aged 37, from Dundee, was sentenced to 10 months in jail after admitting to a series of abusive behaviors directed at his former partner, Lisa Milne. The court heard that Mitchell had engaged in a lengthy campaign of violence and harassment over a four-year period, including multiple incidents of assault, stalking, and reckless conduct.
He previously pleaded guilty to five charges, which encompassed assault, stalking, and culpable and reckless behavior, with a background report supporting these allegations.
During the court proceedings, Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood emphasized the sustained nature of Mitchell's abuse towards Ms.
Milne over a significant period.
Despite the defense's plea for a community payback order, citing that Mitchell had not been in trouble since realizing the relationship was toxic, the Sheriff maintained that a custodial sentence was appropriate due to Mitchell's prior record.
The court detailed various incidents, including Mitchell swinging a glass bottle at Ms.
Milne causing injury during a barbecue in 2010, threatening and abusive behavior such as throwing objects around the house, and physically pushing her into a table.
The court also learned that after their breakup, Mitchell continued to contact Ms.
Milne multiple times daily through various means, demonstrating ongoing harassment.
