JOHN GREGORY FROM DARLINGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENSES IN TEESSIDE
In January 2021, a disturbing incident involving John Gregory, a 79-year-old resident of Darlington, came to light during a court hearing at Teesside Crown Court.Gregory was found guilty of engaging in inappropriate and illegal sexual activity with a young girl, an act that has left lasting scars on the victim and has drawn significant attention to issues of child protection and offender accountability.
According to court proceedings, Gregory had approached the young girl and subjected her to unwanted physical contact that lasted approximately 40 seconds.
The court was told that he touched her through her clothing in a manner that was clearly inappropriate and distressing.
The victim, who was a minor at the time, was reportedly disturbed during the incident, which prompted her to react and seek help.
Gregory then allegedly asked her if she felt uncomfortable, to which she responded affirmatively.
Despite her discomfort, he continued to touch her for an additional 30 seconds before the act was interrupted by another adult who intervened and stopped the assault.
Prosecutor Jonathan Walker detailed the emotional toll the incident has taken on the young girl.
During the sentencing hearing held in Middlesbrough, the victim bravely read her victim impact statement aloud in court.
She described her ongoing struggles with sleep, revealing that she suffers from frequent flashbacks and nightmares that haunt her most nights.
The girl expressed her feelings of fear and vulnerability, stating, “I’m constantly reliving a nightmare which I wish had never happened.” She also shared how her life has been profoundly affected, noting that her ability to maintain friendships and relationships has been severely impacted since the incident.
The victim further conveyed her feelings of terror towards Gregory, emphasizing that his actions have “broken” her.
Her statement underscored the deep psychological scars left by the assault and highlighted the lasting damage caused by such predatory behavior.
John Gregory, who resides on Regal Drive in Darlington, admitted to the court that he was guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child.
It was revealed that Gregory had a prior conviction for a sexual offence involving a minor, which added to the seriousness of his current case.
His guilty plea was entered on the day of his trial, reflecting acknowledgment of his misconduct.
Judge Ashurst addressed Gregory directly, condemning his actions and emphasizing the significant impact on the victim.
The judge stated, “It’s clear that (the victim) was significantly affected by what happened.
I accept on your behalf that you acknowledge what you did to (the victim) and you are sorry.” As a result of his conviction, Gregory was sentenced to six months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender and to comply with a sexual harm prevention order.
The court also mandated that Gregory adhere to notification requirements for a period of seven years, aiming to protect the community and prevent further offenses.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance and justice in safeguarding vulnerable children from sexual predators.
