JOHN COOTE FROM FIFE AND KIRKCALDY ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL
In June 2021, a man from Burntisland, Fife, was found in possession of multiple images of child abuse but avoided jail time.The individual, John Coote, had in his possession several videos classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of content.
The Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court was informed that Coote was just 21 years old at the time of the offense.
Defense lawyer James Walker stated that Coote acknowledged his guilt and had not committed any further crimes since his arrest.
He also mentioned that Coote had a prior conviction in an English court, which resulted in a suspended sentence.
The specific details of that offence were not disclosed during the hearing.
Mr.
Walker emphasized that Coote was facing a difficult situation and noted his youth, suggesting there might still be an opportunity for rehabilitation.
Coote, aged 23 at the time of sentencing, pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children at his residence on Rossend Terrace, Burntisland, between August 18, 2019, and March 12, 2020.
Police officers executed a search warrant on March 12, 2020, finding a mobile phone and USB drive containing numerous illegal files.
On the USB, authorities discovered 47 indecent videos and 44 images of children, while his phone held additional disturbing images.
The majority of these videos were classified as Category A, depicting full sexual acts, animal abuse, or sadism.
Sheriff James Williamson imposed a three-year supervision order and added restrictions including a requirement to inform the sex offenders register for three years.
Coote was also prohibited from owning internet-connected devices without the ability to maintain a usage history, which he must not delete.
Furthermore, he was barred from knowingly having contact with anyone under 16 years old.
