JOHN BREW'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN DUNDEE AND PETERHEAD LEAD TO EIGHT-YEAR SENTENCE
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Dundee and Peterhead, John Brew, a 50-year-old man from Dundee, was sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing two young boys over two decades ago.The heinous acts took place at various locations in Peterhead between October 1992 and February 1995, when the victims were just seven and eight years old.
During the proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh, it was revealed that Brew’s predatory behavior had a profound and lasting impact on the two boys.
The court heard harrowing details of how Brew began his abuse when the victims were very young, with the first victim being just seven years old at the time.
The court was shown evidence that Brew took explicit photographs of his first victim while he was naked, a disturbing detail that underscored the calculated nature of his crimes.
Additionally, Brew subjected the second victim to sexual acts, further compounding the trauma inflicted upon the young boys.
It was only last year that the victims, having endured years of silent suffering, found the courage to contact specialist detectives.
Their bravery in coming forward ultimately led to Brew’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Police Scotland officers diligently gathered enough evidence to build a solid case against Brew, which culminated in a jury convicting him on three charges of sexual assault last Friday.
Throughout the trial, the court heard from the prosecution lawyer, Mark Maguire, who pointed out that Brew had a history of sexual offenses, adding a layer of concern about his potential for reoffending.
As Brew sat in the dock, he was visibly overwhelmed and broke down in tears, a stark contrast to the calm demeanor often expected in such proceedings.
Judge Lord Beckett, who presided over the case, took note of written statements from the victims, which detailed the profound and enduring effects of the abuse.
The judge emphasized that the trauma had significantly impacted their ability to form relationships, maintain employment, and function normally in daily life.
Recognizing the severity of the crimes, Lord Beckett stated that the only appropriate sentence was custodial, aiming to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider abusing children.
Consequently, Brew was sentenced to serve eight years in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the same duration, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities after his release.
