JOGINDER MAHAY OF SEVENOAKS SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN MAIDSTONE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Sevenoaks and the surrounding areas, Joginder Mahay, a 51-year-old man residing on St Johns Hill in Sevenoaks, has been convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of two young girls. The abuse spanned over a period of seven years, beginning when the victims were just seven and nine years old, and took place primarily in Gravesend between the years 2000 and 2007.Despite the gravity of the allegations and the evidence presented during the trial, Mahay maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. His refusal to admit guilt did not sway the jury, which took only five hours to deliberate and reach a verdict. The jury found Mahay guilty on multiple counts, including six charges of rape, eight charges of indecent assault, one charge of digital penetration, and two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.
The investigation was led by Detective Constable Fleur Hardie, who expressed her thoughts on the case. She stated, “Mahay subjected these girls to years of abuse and thought he could get away with these offences. Even when the abuse was reported, he continued to deny the offences and put the girls and their families through the difficulty of a trial. I’d like to commend their bravery in speaking up and helping to ensure this man pays for the crimes he committed. I’d encourage anyone who has been abused, or is being abused, to report it to us.”
Following the conclusion of the trial on March 6, Mahay was sentenced on May 18 at Maidstone Crown Court. The judge handed down a substantial prison term of 18 years, reflecting the severity of his crimes. Additionally, Mahay will serve an extra five years under the terms of an extended sentence, emphasizing the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
As part of his punishment, Mahay was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities. Furthermore, he was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his behavior and contact with minors, aiming to prevent any future offenses. This case underscores the importance of vigilance and the courage of victims in bringing perpetrators to justice, and it serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child sexual abuse in the region.
