JOE WILSON AND SHOCKING INDECENT IMAGE TRADE IN HULL

A 33-year-old man from Hull, identified as Joe Wilson, has been convicted of possessing a significant number of indecent images of children, with the authorities uncovering a disturbing collection exceeding 26,300 images.

Wilson, who resides on St George's Road off Hessle Road in west Hull, admitted to three separate charges related to the possession of these unlawful materials, which spanned from April 2016 to January 2021.

The court heard that these images were part of a repulsive trade that ultimately facilitated the sexual abuse of minors.

The case was brought to light after Wilson's online activities drew the attention of the National Crime Agency.

In February 2021, law enforcement officers raided his home in Hull and seized two mobile phones, which contained the illicit content.

As revealed during the proceedings, the materials included approximately 20 images and nine videos classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of indecency, along with 120 still images and eight videos in Category B, and a staggering 26,171 still images accompanied by 11 videos in Category C.

These files were stored in a compressed 'zipped' folder, a technique often employed to conceal large quantities of illegal images while minimizing storage footprint.

Wilson insisted that he only downloaded and viewed around 529 of these images.

Evidence presented also showed that he had saved links to websites notorious for hosting indecent images of children.

His internet browsing history comprised 114 pages linked to such websites, with search terms like 'little girls,' 'Lolita,' and references to under-18 dating apps, indicating a troubling pattern of curiosity and intent.

Further investigations included the analysis of chat logs revealing Wilson's communications with girls aged from over 16 to under 18.

He exchanged intimate photographs with one girl, sending images of himself while receiving explicit pictures in return.

Despite this, no charges were brought concerning these exchanges.

During mitigation, Nigel Clive noted that Wilson had no prior criminal record and had accepted responsibility by pleading guilty on the day his trial was scheduled.

Clive remarked that there was little to mitigate in offenses such as these, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Most of the images found were in the lowest severity category and stored within the zipped folder, from which Wilson claimed he had rarely accessed them.

He explained that his interest in viewing such material coincided with a period of personal hardship, describing it as a 'downward spiral' during which he turned to pornography instead of substances like alcohol or drugs.

Psychologists assessed him as a low risk for reoffending and noted that he expressed remorse.

Judge Mark Bury sentenced Wilson to a one-year prison term suspended for 12 months, alongside 20 days of compulsory rehabilitation.

Additionally, he was ordered to comply with a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and to register as a sex offender for the same duration.

The two mobile phones seized during the arrest were ordered to be forfeited, and Wilson was reminded of the profound harm caused by such offenses, emphasizing that each image represents real victims of abuse.

Judge Bury concluded by stating, 'He is sexually preoccupied and likes girls under 18,' and made it clear that Wilson's interests were focused on minors aged 16 to 19.

While most images depicted girls under 16, very few involved children under the age of 10, but all reflect a disturbing sexual preoccupation.

The judge underlined the importance of protecting children under 18 from exploitation, and reiterated that offenders like Wilson contribute to a 'disgusting' market benefiting those who profit from the abuse of minors.
