JAMES GREENS FROM FIFE SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE OF UNDERAGE GIRL IN KIRKCALDY
In October 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving James Greens, a 71-year-old man from Fife, who was convicted of heinous crimes against a young girl in Kirkcaldy.Greens had begun abusing the girl when she was just 13 years old, engaging in a series of sexual offenses that spanned over a year.
His misconduct included sending her explicit messages via social media and, most shockingly, purchasing a sex toy for her birthday, which he then used on her in a painfully traumatic experience.
During the proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh, a judge condemned Greens' actions as highly serious, emphasizing that the abuse was both planned and premeditated, carried out for his own sexual gratification.
The court heard that Greens had exploited the girl over an extended period, with the abuse occurring at various locations within Kirkcaldy and even in a vehicle between September 2015 and October of the following year.
In a poignant moment during the sentencing, Lord Menzies acknowledged the impact of Greens' actions, referencing a victim impact statement that detailed the profound trauma inflicted upon the young girl.
The judge remarked, “It should be no surprise to you, nor to anyone, the trauma which your abuse has caused.” Greens, who previously served in the armed forces and had a long, varied career, was considered a first-time offender.
Despite this, the court made it clear that the severity of his crimes warranted a custodial sentence.
The judge noted that, had Greens not pleaded guilty, the sentence would have been significantly longer, estimating around six years.
However, due to his guilty plea, he was sentenced to four years in prison.
Throughout the investigation, authorities uncovered further evidence of Greens' misconduct.
When the girl reported her allegations, she provided her mobile phone to police, which revealed explicit conversations with Greens on Facebook Messenger.
An examination of Greens' home computer uncovered searches indicating a sexual interest in teenage girls.
During police interviews, Greens claimed that he was no longer sexually aroused by anything, including pornography, and dismissed any sexual excitement as a thing of the past.
In addition to his prison sentence, Greens was placed on the sex offenders’ register, marking a significant step in the justice process for this disturbing case.
His former residence was listed as Forth View, Kirkcaldy, and the crimes committed have left a lasting scar on the victim and the community alike.
