IAN TAYLOR FROM DUNDEE ESCAPES PRISON AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT AND ALCOHOL PURCHASE IN CITY CENTRE

In November 2020, a disturbing case involving Ian Taylor, a 51-year-old man from Dundee, came to light after he was involved in a series of troubling incidents in the city centre.

Taylor, who has a prior conviction for sexual offences, was found to have engaged in inappropriate conduct towards a young girl during a night of alcohol consumption in April 2019, yet he narrowly avoided a prison sentence.

According to court records, the incident unfolded after the girl, a school-aged child, met up with her friends and decided to visit the Overgate shopping centre to change out of her school clothes.

The group spent several hours in the city centre, primarily hanging around the area between City Square and Castle Street.

It was during this time, at approximately 9:45 pm, that Taylor approached them.

Witnesses and the prosecution noted that Taylor appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Prosecutor Gavin Burton detailed the sequence of events, explaining that Taylor initially engaged the group in casual conversation.

He then offered to buy alcohol for the girl, which she accepted.

Taylor accompanied her to a Tesco store on Murraygate, where he purchased two bottles of vodka, a bottle of Smirnoff Ice, and a bottle of blue WKD.

The group then moved into a tunnel near Castle Street, where they consumed the alcohol together.

As the evening progressed, the girl and her friend began to feel increasingly uncomfortable around Taylor.

They decided to leave the area and went to McDonald's on Reform Street.

During this time, Taylor approached the girl again and asked for a kiss.

When she refused, Taylor persisted and ultimately sexually assaulted her, justifying his actions by claiming, “That’s for respect.” The girl and her friend then left the scene in a taxi and later reported the incident to staff at their school.

Law enforcement officials quickly identified Taylor and detained him for questioning.

During the police interview at the station, Taylor refused to answer questions, providing “no comment” responses.

Subsequently, he was charged with multiple offences, including sexually assaulting the girl between April 2 and 3, 2019, at various locations in Dundee such as City Square, Reform Street, and Crichton Street.

He also admitted to purchasing alcohol for the girl at Tesco on Murraygate, which was consumed in a public place.

On the day of his trial, Taylor pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court heard that he had previously been convicted of sexual offences, which added weight to the seriousness of his actions.

Despite the gravity of the case, Sheriff George Way decided against immediate imprisonment, citing positive progress Taylor had made under his current community payback order.

The sheriff explained that although Taylor might have faced a custodial sentence, the case was reduced to a summary complaint, limiting the court’s sentencing powers.

As part of his sentence, Taylor was placed on supervision for three years, ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work, and was registered on the sex offender’s register for the duration of his supervision.

The court’s decision reflected a cautious approach, emphasizing rehabilitation and monitoring over incarceration, given the recent positive reports on Taylor’s behavior and compliance with previous court orders.
