September 2023 Shropshire man sentenced for rape and sexual assault A man who admitted eight child sex offences against two girls, including four counts of rape, has been jailed for 19 years and six months. Glenn Poyner, 35, formerly of RAF Benson, Oxfordshire, pleaded guilty to the charges at an earlier hearing. One victim said she no longer slept well due to the abuse, while another said she lived in constant fear. At Shrewsbury Crown Court, Poyner was told he would serve four years and six months on an extended licence period. The offences took place in Shropshire and Worcestershire, the hearing on Friday was told. At a hearing in May, Poyner admitted the rapes, one count of assault, one of causing a child aged under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and two of sexual activity with a child. West Mercia Police previously said the attacks happened in multiple locations including Shropshire and Worcestershire. Poyner appeared before a Shrewsbury Crown Court judge, sitting at Telford Magistrates’ Court. The paedophile admitted four counts of rape, one count of sexual assault, one count of causing a child aged under 13 to engage in sexual activity and two counts of sexual activity with a child. Poyner denied a further nine charges, including rape and taking indecent photographs of a child. The 35-year-old’s pleas were acceptable to the Crown, prosecutor Mark Connor told the court on Friday, May 12. The sex offender was granted conditional bail and will be sentenced in August. No facts of the offences were outlined in court and no details of Poyner’s current employment status were given to the hearing. The case was adjourned so reports, including a psychiatric assessment, could be carried out. Judge Peter Barrie told Poyner: “I am going to ask the probation service to make an assessment. That ought to include a consideration of dangerousness. “The prosecution has accepted that the pleas you have entered today are sufficient to deal with this matter. The next stage is for you to come back to court on August 11 to be dealt with. “I am sure you understand the serious position which you face.”
