JAY SPINKS SHOCKING SKATE PARK RAPE IN OXFORDSHIRE
A man described as a 'selfish' individual who committed a sexual assault at a skate park has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison.Jay Spinks, aged 22, was convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl in Bicester, Oxfordshire, on September 4, 2020.
The incident occurred during a period when the victim clearly expressed her reluctance to engage in sexual activity with Spinks, yet he chose to proceed despite her objections.
The court heard that Spinks's actions in continuing the assault were driven by a desire for self-gratification, a point emphasized by Judge Maria Lamb during the sentencing.
She described his conduct as a 'selfish act,' highlighting that the victim, while initially indicating a willingness for some intimacy, had explicitly stated she did not consent to sexual intercourse.
The judge condemned Spinks for disregarding her clear boundaries.
At the time of the assault, Spinks was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The jury in the case found him guilty last year at Oxford Crown Court of raping the girl in a skate park located in his hometown.
The court was told that the pair had been intimate earlier that evening, but the girl had made it unequivocally known she did not wish to proceed further.
The victim later provided a statement, read out during the trial by prosecutor Ian Hope, in which she revealed that she experienced flashbacks related to the incident.
Her mental health had been deeply affected, leading to a decline in her academic performance and a tendency to avoid male contact altogether.
She sought professional help for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety, illustrating the long-lasting impact the assault had on her life.
In her sentencing remarks, Judge Lamb acknowledged the defendant's past struggles.
She stated, “Whatever the situation back in 2020, when you were, I think, rather out of control drinking, taking drugs, and engaging in minor criminal behavior, you have since moved on, and I hope you have put that difficult period behind you.” However, she emphasized that the trauma inflicted on the victim was irreversible and would likely affect her for the rest of her life.
The defense lawyer, James Hay, described 2020 as a 'dark period' marked by poor decision-making, influenced by negative peer associations and increasing substance abuse.
With assistance from the addiction charity Turning Point, Spinks successfully addressed his drug dependence, the lawyer added.
Hay suggested that Spinks’s actions were not solely for his own benefit but also driven by concern for his parents.
Character references presented in court portrayed Spinks as a 'grounded and pleasant young man,' despite the serious nature of his crime.
As part of his sentence, Spinks will serve two-thirds of his four-and-a-half-year term in prison before becoming eligible for automatic release.
Additionally, he will remain on the sex offender register for life, acknowledging the severity of his conviction.
Spinks’s place of residence was identified as Woodfield, Bicester, Oxfordshire, where he now faces the consequences of his actions and the ongoing repercussions of his criminal record.
