GARETH NORMAN, DUNDEE'S FORMER STREET ANGEL, SENTENCED FOR CHILD RAPE IN DUMFRIES AND DUNDEE
In a case that has shocked the local community, Gareth Norman, a 61-year-old man once celebrated for his charitable work in Dundee, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after being convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed during his youth. The crimes, which spanned several years in the 1970s, involved the abuse of two young girls, one of whom was only seven years old at the time.
Norman’s first known offense took place between 1975 and 1977 in Dumfries, where he raped a seven-year-old girl inside a caravan.
The details of this assault emerged during his trial, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
Additionally, Norman was found guilty of molesting another girl, aged 12 when the abuse began, at an address in Dundee between 1975 and 1978.
These allegations paint a troubling picture of a man whose actions caused lasting harm to his victims.
Norman, who resided on Spence Place in Dundee, was once a prominent figure in the city’s charitable scene.
He served as the head of the now-defunct Night Ministry, an organization dedicated to providing aid and support to Dundee’s homeless population.
His reputation as a “street angel” was built on his efforts to distribute food and essential supplies to those in need, earning him respect and recognition within the community.
Beyond his charitable work, Norman also volunteered with the Royal Navy Reserve and served as a first aider with the British Red Cross, further cementing his image as a dedicated helper of others.
However, these positive contributions were overshadowed by the dark revelations of his past crimes.
Following a trial held last month, Norman was convicted of the charges and remanded into custody pending sentencing.
The court considered background reports before imposing the sentence, which includes his placement on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
The sentencing took place at the High Court in Dundee, where Norman appeared via a video link from HMP Perth, reflecting the seriousness of the case and the impact on his victims and the community at large.
