DUNDEE SNAPCHAT PERVERT CONVICTED OVER CHILD ABUSE FILES
A Snapchat-using individual named Dylan Smith has been found guilty of possessing over 250 child abuse files on his phone, which included more than 100 videos and 23 of the most depraved kind, depicting children aged between three and fifteen being abused. The material arrived on his phone between February 4 and June 11 of the same year.
The police raided his home in Pitkerro Drive, Dundee, on July 13, 2023, and seized his iPhone, which was examined by cybercrime analysts.
The prosecution highlighted that Smith claimed he bought the phone shortly after the last of the files had been downloaded, a story he failed to clarify to police and which was dismissed as false by the jury.
His friend Dylan Reid testified that he lent him £240 to buy a new phone on June 17, 2023, six days after the last files were downloaded.
Smith was previously interviewed by police but did not mention the phone had been purchased recently.
The jury unanimously convicted him of possessing and taking indecent images of children and failing to attend court, with the verdict reached in less than an hour.
Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown ordered that Smith be placed on the sex offenders register and warned that he could face a custodial sentence upon sentencing in September.
Smith has been warned that a jail sentence is a possibility, and police have had to serve warrants to apprehend him twice during the case.
He is currently a first-time offender, and bail has been continued.
The case highlights severe consequences, including potential imprisonment and mandatory sex offender registration.
UPDATE 12/09/2025 Smith, 30, returned to Forfar Sheriff Court for sentencing.
Solicitor Scott Mackie, defending, said his client continued to maintain his innocence.
Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown placed him on supervision for three years and ordered him to engage with the Moving Forward: Making Changes rehabilitation programme.
He was ordered not to contact children under 18, without prior approval.
Smith will stay on the sex offenders register for three years.
He was told the sentence was a direct alternative to jail.
