DUNDEE CHILD SEX OFFENDER DOUGLAS LATTO CAUGHT IN ONLINE CHAT SCANDAL NEAR BAXTER PARK
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Dundee, 25-year-old Douglas Latto has admitted to serious allegations involving the abuse of a child, which came to light after police conducted a raid on his residence near Baxter Park last November.Authorities were initially investigating Latto for possessing indecent images of children.
During the search of his home, they discovered approximately 300 such images stored on his computer, with each image classified at different levels of severity on a three-tier scale.
The police also uncovered incriminating online chat logs in which Latto explicitly admitted to abusing the child victim involved in the case.
According to court reports, the investigation revealed that Latto had engaged in a sexual act with the child when the victim was alone with him.
The victim, who had remained silent for over five years, only disclosed the incident after the police found and examined the chat logs.
The victim’s statement, read aloud in Dundee Sheriff Court, described a chilling moment where, after the abuse, Latto’s demeanor seemed to change as if a “switch flicked,” yet the conversation continued as if nothing had happened.
During the court proceedings, the sheriff addressed Latto, of Park Avenue, emphasizing that his actions placed him in a very serious category of offenders, potentially warranting a custodial sentence.
However, in a decision reflecting the circumstances, the sheriff opted to impose a community payback order instead of immediate imprisonment.
Prosecutor Charmaine Gilmartin outlined the details of the case, stating that the chat logs contained Latto’s own admissions of abusing the child.
She explained that the logs indicated Latto had committed a sex act with the victim on at least one occasion when the child was alone with him.
The court was also informed that the abuse occurred at an address in north-east Fife between 2010 and 2011, with the indecent images being dated from January 26, 2010, to November 12, 2016.
Defense solicitor Anika Jethwa highlighted that Latto had recognized the gravity of his actions and had taken steps to seek help prior to the court proceedings.
She mentioned that he had been undergoing psychological assessment and expressed hope that he would benefit from continued support.
Jethwa emphasized that Latto was genuinely seeking assistance for his difficulties.
Sheriff Alastair Carmichael sentenced Latto to a community payback order, which includes three years of supervision, 120 hours of unpaid work, and participation in a sex offenders’ rehabilitation program.
The court also ordered that Latto be placed on the sex offenders register and released him on bail pending further reports, with the next hearing scheduled for January 18.
This case underscores the importance of vigilant law enforcement and the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation and abuse, especially in cases where offenders attempt to conceal their crimes through digital means.
The community remains urged to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to authorities to protect vulnerable children from harm.
