DUNDEE MAN JAILED FOR 10 YEARS FOR ATTACKING FOUR WOMEN, INCLUDING PREGNANT PARTNER
The court case involved Derek McLaren, a man described as a "drunken boor," who was convicted of attacking four of his former partners, including a pregnant woman who later suffered a miscarriage. The court heard that McLaren targeted these women over a period of 17 years, between June 1990 and August 2016, in Dundee.
He admitted to four charges of assault causing injury at Dundee Sheriff Court.
Prosecutors revealed that McLaren repeatedly assaulted his partners, once knocking a pregnant woman to the ground and hitting her on the head multiple times.
The sheriff, Alastair Brown, condemned such violence, stating, "The drunken boor of a man assaulting his female partner is not just a figure in a cartoon, but has in the past and continues today to be a horrific reality for many women.
It will not be tolerated." Police Scotland’s domestic abuse task force highlighted the danger posed by McLaren, describing him as a "dangerous individual" who committed "violent, sustained assaults" during their relationships.
Detective Sergeant Gordon Patullo emphasized the bravery of the victims in coming forward, asserting, "Derek McLaren’s conviction and sentence should send out a clear message that domestic abuse crimes will be robustly investigated." The sheriff sentenced McLaren to ten years—five years in prison and five years on license after his release—maximizing the possible sentence from the court.
This case underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence, with authorities vowing to intensify investigations and enforce severe penalties on offenders like McLaren.
