DEREK KENNEDY FROM DUNDEE CAUGHT WITH THOUSANDS OF CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES AND VIDEOS
In June 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving Derek Kennedy, a man from Dundee who was found to have committed serious crimes involving child sexual abuse images and videos.Kennedy, who was serving as a police officer with Police Scotland at the time, was discovered to have downloaded a vast collection of illicit material over a period of several years, raising significant concerns about the breach of trust and the severity of his actions.
Detectives executed a search warrant at Kennedy’s residence on Butters Road in Dundee.
During the raid, they uncovered nearly 5,000 images depicting child sexual abuse and rape, alongside over 18 hours of graphic video footage.
Much of this material was classified as Category A, indicating the most severe content, which included scenes of child rape, bestiality, and sadistic acts.
The discovery shocked investigators and highlighted the extent of Kennedy’s involvement in the possession and distribution of such heinous material.
Kennedy, aged 34, initially claimed that he had downloaded the images by accident.
When questioned by officers, he stated, “something in the back of my mind made me keep them,” referring to the images found on his mobile phone.
Despite his initial denial of any sexual interest in the material, subsequent investigations revealed that he had stored and backed up a significant collection of images and videos over a span of three years, from August 2016 to July 2020.
On August 29, 2019, police seized a mobile device from Kennedy’s home during a preliminary analysis, which uncovered indecent images of children.
He was subsequently arrested and taken to Dundee police headquarters.
During questioning, Kennedy admitted to downloading the indecent images but insisted that it was not intentional.
He expressed confusion about why he kept the material, stating, “something in the back of my mind made me keep them.” He also admitted to masturbating while viewing the images but maintained that he had no sexual interest in children.
Further investigation revealed that Kennedy had used two laptops and his mobile phone to store and organize the illicit content.
Evidence showed that he had moved files between devices and created specific folders for the images and videos.
Authorities found that he had employed peer-to-peer file sharing software and used privacy tools, including the Tor browser, to maintain anonymity while searching for and downloading the material.
This indicated a deliberate effort to conceal his activities.
The authorities confirmed that Kennedy was in possession of a total of 4,707 indecent images and 1,118 videos involving children, ranging from infants up to 15 years old.
The content included both male and female victims, with a predominant focus on females.
The videos alone had a combined runtime of over 18 hours, six minutes, and forty seconds.
The material was classified as Category A, signifying the most serious level of child exploitation, featuring scenes of child rape, sadism, and bestiality.
At Dundee Sheriff Court, Sheriff Lorna Drummond ordered Kennedy to be placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
She also granted him bail, with the sentencing deferred to allow for background reports to be prepared.
The case underscored the grave breach of trust and the disturbing nature of Kennedy’s actions, prompting ongoing concern about safeguarding and the integrity of law enforcement personnel involved in such crimes.
