DEAN FARRAR FROM ROCHDALE FACES JAIL AFTER TARGETING OVER 11,000 CHILDREN ONLINE
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Rochdale and beyond, Dean Farrar, a 50-year-old man, has admitted to a heinous pattern of online sexual exploitation involving thousands of children across the globe.The allegations reveal that Farrar used sophisticated methods to lure young victims into engaging in explicit exchanges, with his crimes spanning several years and involving a staggering number of over 11,000 children.
Farrar’s modus operandi involved creating fake social media profiles, where he impersonated a teenage boy to gain the trust of young girls.
He would initiate conversations, often asking them to send explicit photographs or to watch him perform sexual acts.
The severity of his actions was uncovered in October 2014, when a 14-year-old girl in Rochdale was contacted by a boy calling himself “Dean Smythe.” The girl, horrified by the explicit content and requests, immediately handed her device to her mother, who promptly contacted the police.
Authorities traced the online activity back to Farrar’s residence in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
A thorough investigation led to the seizure of his mobile phone and computers, revealing a disturbing array of fake social media accounts on platforms such as Kik, Skype, Xava Yak, and Oovoo.
An examination of his devices uncovered over 11,000 conversations conducted through various chat applications, with no evidence of normal personal or familial communication.
Instead, the messages predominantly involved Farrar contacting children worldwide and sharing indecent images with other offenders.
Prosecutor Jonathan Turner detailed the extent of Farrar’s criminal activities in Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.
He explained that the most serious offenses involved Farrar encouraging girls as young as ten and twelve to insert objects into their private parts.
The court was told that Farrar’s offending began as early as 2011, during which he pretended to be a teenage boy aged between 14 and 16.
He also adopted a female persona to contact young boys and girls, further complicating his web of abuse.
One particularly disturbing case involved Farrar targeting an eight-year-old girl.
He sent her a picture of a 14-year-old boy and asked if they could meet at a KFC restaurant.
Subsequently, he pressured her to send topless photographs of herself.
When she finally complied, Farrar threatened to distribute her images to her friends unless she watched him perform a sexual act.
The court was shown evidence of 19 video clips recovered from Farrar’s phone, depicting young girls in a swimming pool changing room, which police believe he shared with other paedophiles, thereby perpetuating the circulation of these indecent images.
Authorities found a total of 1,432 indecent images and extreme pornography on Farrar’s devices, including graphic content involving women and animals such as dogs and horses.
The police confirmed that Farrar’s sharing of these images contributed to the ongoing distribution within a criminal community that could persist for years.
Farrar has admitted to 41 charges, including making indecent images of children, and faces a significant prison sentence for his crimes.
His case highlights the alarming reach of online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat such heinous acts.
