SALFORD MAN DAVID OCCLESTON SENTENCED FOR DECADES-OLD RAPE OFFENSES IN SALFORD

In a significant case that highlights the enduring pursuit of justice, a man from Salford has been sentenced to serve a lengthy prison term after being convicted of historic sexual offenses. David Occleston, born on August 16, 1953, and residing at Robinia Close, Brookhouse, Salford, was found guilty of two counts of rape that occurred during the 1980s. The conviction followed a detailed five-day trial held at Minshull Street Crown Court, where the evidence against him was thoroughly examined.

Today, Tuesday, December 4, 2012, the court handed down a sentence of 15 years imprisonment to Occleston. In addition to his prison term, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent further offenses. The crimes for which he was convicted involved repeated acts of sexual assault against a teenage girl, with the abuse taking place when the victim was between the ages of 14 and 16.

The victim, who chose to come forward after many years, reported the abuse to police in February 2011. Her decision to speak out came after she had undergone counseling, which perhaps helped her find the courage to seek justice. Her bravery in revealing her traumatic experiences has been commended by authorities and underscores the importance of perseverance in bringing offenders to justice, regardless of the passage of time.

Detective Constable Karen Evans, a member of the Child Abuse Investigation Team based in Swinton, expressed her support for the victim and emphasized the significance of her courage. She stated, “Occleston’s victim has shown enormous bravery in coming forward and speaking of the abuse she suffered all those years ago. Today’s result sends out the powerful message that GMP will always investigate complaints of abuse and that the passing of time will not prevent offenders from being pursued.”

Authorities encourage anyone who has experienced similar abuse to come forward. They can contact Greater Manchester Police at 101 or call 999 in emergencies. The police force has specially trained officers dedicated to providing a compassionate and effective response to victims, assisting them through the often complex criminal justice process.

For those seeking support or medical assistance, St Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Manchester remains available. The center can be reached at 0161 276 6515 and offers comprehensive forensic, counseling, and medical aftercare services. These services are accessible 24 hours a day, either through self-referral or via police assistance, ensuring victims of rape or sexual assault in Greater Manchester receive the necessary support and care.
