ROBERT BURNS SENTENCED IN SALFORD FOR DECADES-OLD SEXUAL ABUSE CASE
In a case that has spanned over two decades, Robert Burns, a 60-year-old man from Salford, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting to a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl during the 1990s. The sentencing took place at Manchester Crown Court on a recent Friday, where Burns pleaded guilty to a total of 18 charges, including indecent assault, gross indecency, and rape. These disturbing acts were perpetrated against the same victim, who was only six years old when the abuse first began in 1990. The young girl, now an adult, decided to come forward and report the crimes to the police last year, revealing that Burns had initially lured her into situations where he could assault her. According to her statement, Burns would often isolate her by getting her alone and would sometimes ply her with alcohol, making her more vulnerable to his advances.
The abuse escalated over time, with Burns eventually committing rape. Although the assaults ceased in 1994, the psychological scars persisted, and the victim has struggled with depression and panic attacks throughout her adult life. Her courage in coming forward and sharing her story was instrumental in bringing Burns to justice.
Greater Manchester Police were able to locate Burns thanks to the detailed statement provided by the victim. Law enforcement officials used her testimony to build a case against him, leading to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Sergeant Mark Evans expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of the victim’s bravery. He stated, ‘This woman has been incredibly brave by coming forward and helping us put Burns through the court process. She should feel that justice has now been done.’
Sergeant Evans also conveyed his hope that the victim would now be able to begin healing and move forward with her life, free from the shadow of the past. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of speaking out against abuse, regardless of how much time has passed.
