WAYNE GREENTREE OF SALFORD SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF CHILD SEX OFFENSES

In a landmark case that has spanned over three decades, Wayne Greentree, a 50-year-old man from Salford, has finally been brought to justice for his long history of abusing young girls. The disturbing revelations emerged during a court hearing at Manchester Crown Court, where Greentree was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his heinous crimes.

Police officials have described Greentree as a ‘predator’ and an ‘opportunist,’ emphasizing the calculated nature of his offenses and the profound suffering inflicted upon his victims. The investigation uncovered a pattern of abuse that stretched from the late 1970s through to 2009, affecting at least four young girls who were targeted during this period.

One of the victims, speaking out publicly, recounted how Greentree had stolen from her ‘the most precious thing a child has… innocence,’ highlighting the deep emotional scars left by his actions. Her testimony underscores the devastating impact of his crimes and the courage it took to come forward.

Initially, Greentree denied all allegations, maintaining his innocence during the early stages of the trial. However, after four days of proceedings, he shockingly admitted to 18 charges, including child rape, attempted child rape, and indecent assault of children. This plea marked a significant turning point in the case, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.

Historical records reveal that two of the victims had previously reported their abuse in 1996. These complaints prompted an investigation, and Greentree was charged in relation to one of these cases. Unfortunately, the case was halted when the victim withdrew her complaint, leaving the matter unresolved at that time.

It was not until 2016 that another victim came forward, reigniting the investigation. Authorities then contacted the remaining victims, gathering sufficient evidence to present a comprehensive case to the Crown Prosecution Service. This renewed effort culminated in Greentree’s conviction.

Detective Constable Victoria Burgess, who led the investigation, praised the victims for their bravery. She stated, “The victims were extremely courageous in standing up to Greentree and making him face what he had done to them, when he finally admitted what he is and the true extent of what he did. The abuse has caused them unimaginable pain, anguish and long-lasting harm. They have been truly brave throughout this ordeal.”

The court heard that Greentree’s offending spanned over 30 years, from 1979 to 2009, during which he targeted vulnerable young girls in Salford. His actions have been characterized as those of a dangerous sexual predator who exploited opportunities to prey on those most defenseless.

In addition to his prison sentence, Greentree has been subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect indefinitely. He is also required to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and preventing further harm to the community.

Police and support agencies continue to emphasize the importance of victims coming forward, assuring that they will be listened to without judgment and provided with the necessary support. Detective Burgess concluded, “By coming forward and reporting this to police they could potentially encourage other victims of sexual offences to have the strength to come forward.”
