DAVID HARTLEY SENTENCED IN HULL FOR VILE SEXUAL MISCONDUCT INVOLVING A YOUNG GIRL

A young girl from Hull endured severe emotional trauma after a man named David Hartley, aged 29, engaged in inappropriate and sexually explicit communication with her, causing lasting psychological damage.

The incident took place over a period from June 14 to August 22, 2022, and has left the victim suffering from nightmares, flashbacks, and a profound sense of distrust that continues to affect her daily life.

According to court proceedings at Hull Crown Court, Hartley, who resides on Sandfield Close in Market Weighton, admitted to engaging in sexual communication with a minor.

The prosecution, led by Michael Masson, detailed how Hartley sent the girl explicit images of himself via Snapchat, a social media platform known for its ephemeral messaging.

The girl, who was a minor at the time, was deeply shocked and distressed upon viewing the X-rated photographs, which she subsequently shared with her mother.

This revelation prompted the girl’s family to report the matter to the police.

During police interviews, the young girl recounted that Hartley had told her, “This could be mine and your secret.

This could live in your head rent-free,” indicating an attempt to manipulate her into silence.

The girl also described how Hartley would make inappropriate jokes about her body and maintain an overly close and uncomfortable relationship with her, constantly messaging her and crossing boundaries that should have been respected.

Initially, Hartley denied sending any intimate images or messages, but he later admitted to the police that such communications, including the explicit pictures, had indeed taken place.

It was noted that Hartley had no previous criminal convictions, which perhaps contributed to the court’s consideration of his overall risk of reoffending.

In a heartfelt statement addressed directly to Hartley, the girl expressed how her life has been irrevocably changed since the incident.

She described feeling like “a broken piece of glass,” overwhelmed by emotional struggles, and crying for hours on end.

She admitted to not fully understanding or processing what had happened at the time, but the impact has been profound.

She revealed that she was afraid to go out, especially when walking to school, and suffered frequent flashbacks that made her feel unsafe and anxious.

Her trust in others was shattered, and she found it difficult to make new friends, feeling betrayed and ashamed of herself.

The girl also shared her nightmares, where she imagined Hartley being angry and insisting that she keep their secret, which only intensified her feelings of disgust and discomfort.

Her mental health has suffered significantly, and she expressed that she would never be the same girl she once was, questioning what she did to deserve such treatment.

During mitigation, lawyer Ben Hammersley emphasized that Hartley did not intentionally target the girl for these actions.

He acknowledged that the behavior was “absolutely vile” and expressed Hartley’s remorse and shame.

Hammersley pointed out that Hartley’s conduct was inappropriate and that he should have acted responsibly as an adult.

The court was told that Hartley had been employed in well-paid jobs most of his adult life and had been involved in the scouting movement.

At the time of sentencing, it was also noted that Hartley’s partner was expecting their first child in February next year.

The court considered him to be a low risk of reoffending.

Judge Tahir Khan KC addressed Hartley directly, stating, “For a short period of time, he was in denial.” The judge emphasized that Hartley knew the girl was a child and yet continued to behave inappropriately around her.

The explicit images he sent were deemed wholly unacceptable, and the judge highlighted the profound impact his actions had on the victim’s mental health.

The girl’s life had been turned upside down, with her experiencing flashbacks, social withdrawal, and emotional distress.

Her mother’s decision to report the matter was seen as the right and responsible action.

In sentencing, Hartley received a 14-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Additionally, he was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work, attend 30 days of rehabilitation, and was subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.

He is also required to register as a sex offender for ten years and is subject to a ten-year restraining order to prevent any contact with the victim.
