DAVID GILCHRIST SENTENCED IN FIFE FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND ILLEGAL FILMING OF UNDERAGE GIRL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Fife, David Gilchrist, a 37-year-old man from Nith Street, Dunfermline, was sentenced to prison after a series of heinous crimes involving the exploitation of a young girl and the possession of indecent images of children.The incident came to light after Gilchrist, who had known his victim since she was just five years old, secretly recorded her in a vulnerable moment within his own home.
According to court proceedings, Gilchrist had initially set up a camera in his residence with the misguided intention of capturing supposed paranormal activity.
However, instead of supernatural phenomena, the camera captured private and distressing images of a girl, aged between 13 and 16 at the time, as she was drying herself after a shower.
These images were taken without her knowledge or consent, causing significant emotional harm to the victim.
The court heard that Gilchrist found the footage and, over a period of 17 months, continued to film the girl on three additional occasions, further violating her privacy and trust.
The severity of his actions was compounded when police investigators examined his computers and discovered hundreds of child pornography images.
Some of these images were classified at the highest levels of severity on the scale used to measure such abuse material, indicating the extreme nature of the content he possessed.
Gilchrist faced two main charges: first, for downloading indecent images of children between October 2, 2011, and June 25, 2014; and second, for filming the girl in a private act, specifically while she was drying herself after showering, between January 22, 2013, and June 25, 2014.
The court was told that Gilchrist had admitted to these offences, and his defense solicitor, Gordon Martin, highlighted that Gilchrist had taken steps to delete the images from the USB drive where they were stored.
The device was later passed to his wife, but he did not destroy it.
During sentencing, Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist QC condemned Gilchrist’s actions, emphasizing the gravity of the crimes.
He stated, “You deliberately filmed this young girl in circumstances which caused her considerable distress,” and added, “This was a serious breach of trust.” The sheriff sentenced Gilchrist to 14 months in prison and imposed an extended sentence of 22 months, which will require him to be supervised in the community upon his release.
Additionally, Gilchrist was placed on the sex offender’s register for a period of 10 years, reflecting the long-term implications of his offences.
