DARRIN EDWARDS DUNDEE PREDATOR SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL OFFENCES INVOLVING TEENAGERS
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the city of Dundee, Darren Edwards, a 21-year-old man, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of a series of heinous crimes involving underage girls.The offences, which spanned over several years, included the sexual abuse and rape of minors, as well as the distribution of indecent images and sexual messages via social media platforms, primarily Snapchat.
Edwards was found guilty of a total of 17 charges, which encompassed criminal conduct directed towards 13 children and teenagers under the age of 16.
The court heard that Edwards had targeted young girls, some as young as 11, by initiating contact through Snapchat, a popular social media app.
He sent some victims explicit images, sexualised messages, and attempted to persuade them to send him explicit photographs in return.
The judge, Lord Armstrong, emphasized the severity of Edwards' actions, stating, “You have been convicted in all of 17 charges concerning criminal conduct directed towards 13 young and older children, all under the age of 16 years.” During the proceedings, Lord Armstrong noted that a background report on Edwards revealed his persistent denial of guilt.
The judge expressed his view that there was no suitable alternative to a custodial sentence, underscoring the gravity of the crimes committed.
Edwards, who was 21 at the time of sentencing, had previously denied multiple charges during an earlier trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.
However, he was convicted of 10 offences related to sending sexual material via Snapchat and two additional charges of sending indecent text messages.
Furthermore, he was found guilty of having sexual relations with girls under 16 and of raping one of them in 2017 in Dundee.
Despite the convictions, Edwards was acquitted of 14 other charges, as the jury did not find sufficient evidence to convict him on those counts.
One of the victims, a 14-year-old girl, testified that Edwards contacted her through Snapchat, claiming she was unsure how he obtained her username, as he told her he knew her from a mutual friend.
She explained that initially, their contact was minimal, but she gradually became more comfortable with him.
Edwards claimed to be 15, while she was 14 at the time.
The girl recounted that Edwards had sent her explicit photos, including images of his genitals, on two or three occasions before she told him to stop.
She refused his repeated requests for her to send explicit images of herself, maintaining her refusal despite his persistence.
She also described how Edwards invited her to his home, initially under the pretense of talking, but the visit culminated in sexual activity early in 2016.
Another disturbing aspect of Edwards’ offending involved his contact with the daughters of a woman who later reported him to the police.
The woman revealed that her 15-year-old daughter had confided in her about a sexual encounter, and her 13-year-old daughter had been messaging Edwards, who was attempting to meet her.
The mother confirmed that Edwards was the same individual who had been messaging her older daughter, prompting her to report the matter to authorities.
Edwards admitted to having sex with a 14-year-old girl in 2016, claiming he was aware of her age and did not believe his actions were wrong, stating, “I wasn’t aware it was wrong.
I knew it was frowned upon.” He also acknowledged that the girl was comfortable with the encounter, having told him she had previously engaged in sex.
Further offences included underage sexual activity with another 14-year-old girl in April 2016 at a house in Dundee, as well as sexual encounters with a girl aged 14 and 15 in a wooded area in the city.
During these incidents, Edwards sent explicit images and sexual messages via Snapchat.
In 2017, he carried out an unwanted sexual act on one of these girls, which was classified as rape.
His offending history extended from February 2013, when he was just 15, through to February 2018.
In addition to the criminal acts, Edwards was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
During the sentencing, Edwards’ defense lawyer, Jonathan Crowe, stated that his client had learned a “salutary lesson” from his court experience.
Crowe expressed hope that Edwards would take responsibility for his actions and acknowledged the impact of the case.
Nonetheless, the court’s decision was clear, and Edwards was handed a significant custodial sentence, marking a stern warning to others about the consequences of such predatory behaviour.
