COLIN BROWN FROM DUNDEE SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN EDINBURGH AND LIVINGSTON
In March 2014, a disturbing case involving a convicted sex offender from Dundee culminated in a significant prison sentence, highlighting the severity of his crimes against young girls.The offender, Colin Brown, aged 43 and formerly residing on Exchange Street in Dundee, was brought before the High Court in Edinburgh where he faced justice for a series of heinous sexual offenses.
Brown was found guilty of raping two young girls and molesting a third victim, with attempts to commit further sexual assaults.
The court heard that his actions had a devastating impact on the victims, robbing them of their childhood innocence.
As the verdict was announced, the courtroom erupted with public support, with shouts of “yes” echoing from the benches at the High Court in Edinburgh as the judge delivered her sentence.
Lady Scott, presiding over the case, expressed her firm stance on the gravity of Brown’s crimes.
She stated that she was convinced that Brown posed a serious ongoing threat to children and ordered that he be subjected to an additional three years of supervision following his release.
The judge also warned that Brown could be returned to prison during this supervision period if he failed to comply with the conditions of his release on licence.
The court detailed the disturbing nature of Brown’s offenses, noting that his first two victims, who were the youngest, were utterly defenseless during the abuse.
The third victim, who was in her teens at the time, had attempted to resist his advances.
Lady Scott emphasized the profound harm inflicted upon these young girls, stating, “Your victims have been left robbed of their childhood.” Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Brown’s pattern of abuse spanned approximately four years.
The second victim recounted being raped on multiple occasions, with incidents occurring at a house in Dundee between March 2001 and January 2004.
The first victim, who was as young as three, was molested and subjected to attempted rape at a residence in Dundee between March 2001 and May 2002, when she was between three and four years old.
The third victim, also from Dundee, was raped both before and after her 14th birthday at various locations in the city.
Despite denying the charges, Brown was convicted by a jury of multiple offenses, including indecent behavior, attempted rape, and rape.
His defense counsel, Mark Stewart QC, acknowledged that Brown’s conduct was serious and that a custodial sentence was inevitable.
Notably, Brown had no prior convictions for similar or other serious crimes, but he was nonetheless sentenced to nine years in prison and was placed on the sex offenders register for life.
In a related and equally disturbing case, Brown’s crimes in Dundee between 2001 and 2005 drew widespread condemnation.
A victim’s friend, speaking out publicly, condemned Brown in harsh terms, stating, “He’s lowlife scum.
In my honest opinion he should be hung, drawn and quartered.
He’s not worth the air he breathes.” The friend expressed outrage at the severity of Brown’s offenses, which involved three victims all under the age of 16.
Brown’s sentencing was scheduled for March 28 at the High Court in Livingston.
The friend recounted the reactions of the victims’ families, describing a sense of relief and emotional release following the guilty verdict.
She observed that Brown showed no remorse during the trial, standing motionless and unresponsive when the verdict was read, and remarking only that the handcuffs felt “too tight.” The emotional toll on the victims’ families was palpable, with many in tears, feeling a sense of justice finally being served.
