CHRISTOPHER MARSHALL AND HIS SHOCKING ATTEMPT TO MEET A CHILD IN DUNDEE AND DERBYSHIRE
A 60-year-old man from Dundee, Christopher Marshall, embarked on a 400-mile journey with the sinister intent of meeting a 13-year-old girl for sexual purposes, warning her that the encounter would be 'hurt the first time.' Marshall's plans were thwarted when he arrived in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, only to be confronted by a vigilante group dedicated to preventing child exploitation.Authorities discovered him at the meeting spot with a balaclava, a knife, and Viagra-style tablets in his vehicle, raising suspicions about his intentions.
Marshall's unlawful activities included engaging with online decoys set up by a self-described paedophile hunter organization.
The group, known as Demon Hunters, created a fake Facebook profile under the name 'Tia' in September of the previous year, claiming to be a 12-year-old girl.
Marshall accepted her friend request and soon began exchanging explicit messages, revealing his willingness to engage in sexual acts with a minor.
During their online communication, the decoy confided that she was unhappy at home, prompting Marshall to suggest she move in with him in Scotland, even going so far as to advise her to bring her birth certificate.
Subsequently, Marshall made friends with another decoy, a girl posing as 'Leah.' He sent her photographs of his private parts and asked if she wanted to play with them, continuing this pattern of sexual conversation over approximately ten days.
When she claimed to have run away from home, Marshall declared he would travel from Dundee to Derbyshire to meet her in person.
However, his plans were foiled when the vigilante group flagged his arrival to the police, who promptly detained him.
Upon arrest, police searched Marshall's vehicle and discovered four Viagra-style tablets, a balaclava—claimed to be issued for work, which was confirmed by his employer—and a knife.
He explained that the balaclava was part of his work gear, a statement supported by his employer’s verification.
Marshall, who had no fixed address and appeared via video link from HMP Nottingham, admitted to multiple charges, including attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming, attempting to engage a child in sexual communication, and possession of a bladed article.
It was noted that he had no prior convictions.
During proceedings at Derby Crown Court, Judge Michael Auty QC sentenced Marshall to three and a half years in prison.
The judge emphasized the importance of protecting children from individuals like Marshall, highlighting the distinction between online fantasies and real-world actions.
His words reflected concern that Marshall's possession of items such as the balaclava, knife, and tablets demonstrated an intent to carry out a penetrative sexual offense had the opportunity arisen.
The fact that the girl was a decoy was considered as mitigating factors.
Prosecutor Jon Fountain detailed how the vigilante group had set up a decoy Facebook profile and how Marshall’s prior communications included explicit exchanges and suggestive conversations.
The judge also ordered Marshall to be subject to a lifetime sexual harm prevention order and to be registered on the sex offender register for life, emphasizing the serious nature of his offenses.
Mitigating counsel Fergus Malone argued that Marshall might be better managed within the community, citing his recent personal losses—including the deaths of his mother and partner in 2018—and noting that this was his first stint in prison.
Nonetheless, the court's primary focus was on safeguarding the community from further harm, leading to the severe penalties imposed on Marshall for his predatory behavior in Dundee and Derbyshire.
