CHRISTIAN SCHONENBERGER SENTENCED IN DUNDEE FOR VIOLENT CRIMES AND ANIMAL ABUSE
A man named Christian Schonenberger, who carried out a series of brutal and controlling acts of violence against a woman in the Dundee area, has been formally convicted and sentenced to prison.The conviction was handed down following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh on 9 September 2024, where Schonenberger was found guilty of multiple serious offences.
In addition to the crimes against the woman, Schonenberger was also convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to two XL Bully dogs.
He admitted to repeatedly punching, kicking, and stamping on the animals, using various objects such as pots and pans during the assaults.
On one particularly disturbing occasion, when the victim attempted to leave him, Schonenberger sent her a video showing him kicking and punching the dogs repeatedly, further demonstrating his violent tendencies.
The woman endured her ordeal over a period of approximately 12 months, during which she was subjected to a pattern of severe abuse at various locations within Dundee.
Schonenberger systematically isolated her from her friends and family, making it difficult for her to seek help or support.
He also prevented her from finding employment and constantly demanded to know her whereabouts, exerting control over her daily life.
His harassment extended to restricting her use of social media, thereby cutting off her communication with others, and he persistently contacted her through text messages and phone calls.
His physical abuse was particularly brutal.
The court heard that he seized her by the neck, choked her to the point of losing consciousness, and inflicted injuries that posed a real danger to her life.
He also struck her repeatedly on the head and body with a metal pole, and at one point, he detained her against her will in her own home, preventing her from leaving.
The violence escalated further when he used knives to inflict severe injuries and disfigurement, all while preventing her from seeking medical assistance for her injuries.
Despite her injuries, Schonenberger continued to exert control over her, even from behind bars.
He attempted to influence her to withdraw her police statements and told her not to attend court proceedings.
His actions demonstrated a continued pattern of coercion and abuse, aimed at silencing her and maintaining dominance.
On 12 November 2024, the High Court in Edinburgh sentenced Schonenberger to a term of imprisonment.
His name has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
Additionally, a non-harassment order was issued, banning him from any contact or attempts to contact the victim for an indefinite period.
He was also prohibited from owning or keeping animals for the next ten years.
Katrina Parkes, Scotland’s Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offending, commented on the case, stating, “Christian Schonenberger is a dangerous individual who has inflicted unimaginable trauma on the victim through his depraved offending.
During the course of his abuse, he also subjected these two dogs to horrific acts of violence in a bid to further coerce and control the victim as she tried to protect them.
It is thanks to her bravery in coming forward and reporting him to the authorities that this prosecution has been possible.” She further emphasized the importance of victims coming forward, saying, “Behaviour such as this has no place in Scotland and Schonenberger will now face the consequences of his actions, which I hope brings some comfort.
I would urge any victims of similar offending to report it.
You will be listened to and supported as we use all the tools available to us to seek justice.” Following an appeal, a Bill of Advocation was passed on 10 January 2025, which quashed the original sentence of seven years and six months.
A new sentence was imposed, totaling eight years and eight months, with five years and eight months to be served in custody.
