DUNDEE MAN CARL O'BRIEN SENTENCED AFTER VICIOUS DOMESTIC ASSAULT AND RACIST OUTBURSTS
Carl O'Brien, a resident of Dundee with a troubling criminal history, has been sentenced to prison following a violent domestic assault that left his girlfriend seriously injured.The incident occurred at his residence on Kilbride Place, where O'Brien, 27, admitted to severely injuring his partner during a brutal attack.
After the assault, police swiftly intervened, transporting the injured woman to the accident and emergency department at Ninewells Hospital.
Medical examinations revealed that she had sustained a fractured cheekbone, likely caused by a series of punches delivered by O'Brien.
The woman also reported feeling dizzy and experiencing double vision, symptoms consistent with her facial injuries.
O'Brien’s criminal record is extensive, including previous racially motivated outbursts directed at staff of the Scottish National Party (SNP).
His history of racially charged behavior includes making abusive phone calls to SNP officials and targeting SNP MP Stewart Hosie with racist remarks.
In 2023, O'Brien and a woman made more than a dozen threatening and racist phone calls to SNP staff, and they also confronted then-First Minister Humza Yousaf with racist abuse in Dundee.
The couple expressed support for Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine and engaged in racist harassment of innocent restaurant patrons before police intervened to arrest them.
In the recent assault case, O'Brien had been on bail when he admitted to attacking his then-partner at their Whitfield home on July 28 of the previous year.
He confessed to repeatedly punching her in the head and body, causing significant injuries.
The fiscal depute, Michael Robertson, explained that the couple had been rekindling their relationship for about a month prior to the assault.
On the day of the incident, they had been drinking together and were later heard arguing.
During the altercation, O'Brien punched the woman so forcefully that she fell onto a bed, and she reported feeling additional blows.
Following the attack, police took the woman to Ninewells Hospital, where medical staff suspected she had suffered a fractured cheekbone beneath facial swelling.
She was left feeling dizzy and suffering from double vision as a result of her injuries.
O'Brien, who is a father of two, had his sentencing deferred to allow for social work assessments.
His solicitor, Ross Bennett, described the incident as a “one-off,” attempting to mitigate the severity of the case.
However, Sheriff Derek Hamilton emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating that if the case had remained on indictment as initially prosecuted, O'Brien could have faced a longer prison sentence.
Ultimately, the sheriff sentenced him to eight months in jail and imposed a five-year non-harassment order to protect his former partner.
During the sentencing, Sheriff Hamilton highlighted that O'Brien was fortunate that the case was reduced to a summary complaint, which limited the sentencing powers available.
The court also acknowledged O'Brien’s prior convictions, including his racially motivated offenses and a previous incident where he fell 39 feet from a balcony during a holiday in Portugal, which was described as a situation where he was “lucky to be alive.”
