DUNDEE MAN BRIAN JACOBI ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES
In a case that has shocked the community of Dundee, Brian Jacobi, a 68-year-old resident of Wishart Place, narrowly avoided imprisonment after being found guilty of possessing indecent images and videos depicting children.The incident dates back to a police operation carried out in May 2018, during which authorities uncovered a disturbing collection of illicit material on Jacobi’s personal computer.
According to court records, police executed a search warrant at Jacobi’s residence on May 16, 2018, after receiving intelligence about his online activities.
During the investigation, a preliminary review of his computer revealed a total of 143 indecent images of children, along with eight videos that contained highly inappropriate content involving minors.
Despite Jacobi’s efforts to conceal his online activity by installing advanced file cleaning software, investigators were able to recover evidence indicating his proficiency with such tools.
During police interviews, Jacobi admitted to viewing pornography online and acknowledged that some of the images might feature children aged between 13 and 16.
However, he attempted to justify his actions by claiming that the children in the images were Japanese, which made it difficult for him to determine their exact ages.
He further stated that his intent in downloading the material was to 'test his libido,' asserting that he had no intention of engaging in any illegal activity involving minors.
The court heard that Jacobi had taken deliberate steps to erase his browsing history and sensitive data, employing specialized software designed for such purposes.
Law enforcement experts confirmed that he demonstrated a high level of knowledge and skill in using these tools to hide his online behavior.
In court, the prosecution highlighted the seriousness of the case, with Fiscal depute Eilidh Robetson describing the police operation and subsequent findings.
She emphasized that Jacobi’s actions were both disturbing and indicative of a calculated effort to conceal his activities.
Jacobi pleaded guilty to charges of possessing and creating indecent images of children, with the offenses spanning from January 5, 2016, to March 26, 2018, at his Dundee home.
His defense solicitor, Kevin Hampton, requested a deferred sentencing hearing to allow for social work assessments and mitigation.
The sheriff, Alastair Brown, agreed to postpone the sentencing until next month and placed Jacobi on bail, while also registering him on the sex offenders register for a period of five years.
In his remarks, Sheriff Brown acknowledged that although the number of images was relatively small compared to similar cases, there were troubling features in the evidence.
As part of the sentence, Jacobi was ordered to complete 225 hours of unpaid work, undergo three years of supervised probation, and participate in a sex offenders treatment program.
The court’s decision reflects the gravity of possessing such material, even when the quantity appears limited, and underscores the ongoing concern about safeguarding minors from exploitation and abuse.
